Tea originated in southwest China during the Shang dynasty between 2000-1000 BC and was used as a medicinal drink. It later spread to Japan in the 6th century AD where it became popular among the upper classes. Tea was introduced to Britain in the 17th century by the East India Company and became the national drink by 1750. While tea was popular in America in the 18th century, Americans switched to coffee after the Tea Act but are now consuming more tea than ever due to its numerous health benefits.
