The Nipmuc tribe lived in the area of Hampton, CT during the 1600s, settling near fresh water sources like rivers and lakes. They used wampum, made from clam shells, for trading, ornamentation, and ceremonies. In the 1700s, Peter Foster and his 12 sons all fought in the Revolutionary War. John Brewster Jr, who was born deaf, became a famous painter in Hampton. Hampton had various industries in the 1700s like button making and became an official town in 1786. In the 1900s, wealthy men John Goodwin and Edwin Teale bought land in Hampton and helped establish forests and nature trails.
