Historians study past events, people, and ideas within a specific time period, country, or religion to develop theories to explain what happened. They typically work 40 hours per week teaching in colleges or universities with offices and classrooms. A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required to become a historian, and opportunities are advertised in newspapers or by directly applying to employers. Historians have very good employment opportunities nationally, though competition exists for openings, and salary ranges from $15,000 to $72,000 depending on education and experience level. Common employers include colleges and universities, as well as state and local governments.
