From The President
The campus
Set on the campus of Lone Star College-Montgomery, the
conference offers you access to the resources of one of the larg-
est community college districts in Texas. LSC-Montgomery is a
520,000-square-foot comprehensive college located on 210 acres
between The Woodlands and Conroe on College Park Drive (Hwy.
242). The college recently opened three new buildings­— a General
Academic Center, a Health Science Center, and a Music Hall, along
with the new LSC-Conroe Center, located
in north Conroe off FM 3083.
Dorinda Rose
An IT Business Analyst, Dorinda is a member of NAPW and PMI and currently works for an
international Architecture/Engineering firm in Houston. During her career, she has taken on
many IT roles. Today, she is a driving force for cross-training among the IT Department.
Coleman Sisson
Coleman is the CEO of BubbleUp, LLC in The Woodlands, TX. He has a BS degree in Data
Processing and Quantitative Analysis from the University of Arkansas. He has over 30 years of
experience in the high-tech industry and has worked with Jimmy Buffett since 1989.
Laura Spingola, M.B.A.
Laura is Founder and President of Trade Resources Ltd., a Chicago-based market development
company that provides international management, marketing, training and reporting services
for business. She has conducted business in Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Dayna Steele
Aerospace industry advocate and wife of retired NASA pilot Charlie Justiz, Dana is the creator
of several companies, a media strategist, blogs for Fast Company and is the author of Rock to
the Top: What I Learned about Success from the World’s Greatest Rock Stars.
William Thurmond, M.S.
Will is the founder and CEO of Emerging Markets Online, a business strategy and market
intelligence firm focused on the future of global energy, algae and biofuels markets. He is an
entrepreneur and has consulted for dozens of Fortune 500 and emerging tech companies.
Matthew Wettergreen, Ph.D.
Matthew Wettergreen has a formal education in bioengineering with a specialization in bio-
mechanics and organ printing and an informal education in non-profit/arts management and
marketing, community organizing, and digital strategy.
LaVerne Williams, A.I.A., LEED A.P.
LaVerne is an Architect, Building Ecologist, Bioneer, a LEED Accredited Professional, and the
CEO & Founder of ENVIRONMENT ASSOCIATES, Architects & Consultants, He has
almost 40 years of experience as a leader and pioneer of green building architectural practice.

The Symposium
Co-sponsored by the college’s Business and Social Sciences Division and the Biotechnology Institute,
the High Tech Conference is designed to familiarize participants with Texas’ high tech eco-system,
while highlighting emerging opportunities within the state’s technology-driven industries.
	 The event is designed to educate participants about the ‘business’ of technology and the roles
that technologies play in meeting the region’s economic needs. This day-long event is hosted under
the umbrella of the StarTech Symposium, a three day affair that includes a job fair, a workshop on
nanotechnology and an algae certification course. With more than 45 presenters and exhibitors, all
focused on the most current industry trends and technology-related scientific breakthroughs, the
conference provides on-site opportunities that will motivate, challenge and inspire anyone who is
working in or thinking about a career in an industry driven by energy, science or technology.

OPENING REMARKS by Texas Radio Hall of Fame member and aerospace industry advocate Dayna Steele.

NASA/Johnson Space Center
PANELISTS
Sarah M. Worthy, Schipul - Sarah has over 12 years experience in marketing and business development
within the technology and web industries. She also volunteers as the Houston Curator for the StartupDigest,
organizes Houston StartupWeekend, and volunteers with SpaceUp Houston.
Holly Griffith, ISS flight controller (OSO) and former Shuttle flight controller. Holly has a degree in
Mechanical Engineering from McNeese State University. She began work as a Shuttle flight controller in
the Electrical Power System (EGIL) in 2004. After Shuttle ended, she moved over to the ISS program as an
Operations Support Officer (OSO) flight controller.
Justin Kugler, ISS National Lab Implementation Lead, SAIC. Justin works at NASA Johnson Space Center
in the International Space Station National Laboratory Office, where he coordinates research planning and
program integration for commercial payloads and education projects. He studied Aerospace Engineering at
Texas A&M and Mechanical Engineering at Rice.
Emerging Technologies
Moderated by Linnea Fletcher, Ph.D. Linnea holds degrees in Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry from the
University of California and a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Texas. She began a career in edu-
cation at Austin Community College in 1991 and in 1997, brought biotechnology training to ACC, serving as
its first Department Chair until Fall 2008.

Daniel Kainer, Ph.D., M.S.
An e-commerce entrepreneur, when not serving as the Director of the Biotechnology Institute
at LSC-Montgomery, Daniel Kainer spends his time becoming proficient at new media tech-
nologies and teaching other techpreneurs how to develop their own e-commerce businesses.
George King
George has worked in the energy sector for 35 years, starting in oil and gas exploration, pro-
duction and related segments of hydrocarbon processing. He has experience with nuclear, coal
and natural gas fired steam plants, hydrogen fuel cells, geothermal, thermal solar, and more.
Katrina Kokoska, M.S.
Katrina is the Manager of the Creative Services Division at Schipul - The Web Marketing
Company where she oversees client web marketing initiatives including strategy development,
ongoing content creation, social media marketing, account management and client training.
Brian Lang
Brian is CEO of Seniors In Touch and is a 20 year veteran of building successful online
communities and enacting Social Media strategies. For over a decade he served national faith
groups as an executive advising and deploying online communication platforms.
Rajiv Malkan, Ph.D., M.S.
Rajiv Malkan has over 25 years of experience in higher education. His speciality is education
management. In 2010, he was the recipient of The University of Texas at Austin, NISOD
Excellence Award and Lone Star College-Montgomery Faculty Excellence Award.
Andrew W. Nunn
Andrew is the art director of Operation: Zeus, a multi-layered non-profit organization for
Veterans, which is in the process of filming a documentary about this generations’ Veterans.
This venture receives tremendous support from social media, especially Kickstarter.
Van Oler, M.S.
A microwave radio and network design engineer under contract to AT&T Mobility, Van is
responsible for increasing efficiency and profitability of wireless networks through topology
analysis across radio, copper, and fiber transmission systems. He also has 14 years of experi-
ence in military communications.
Mark Reynolds, M.S.
Mark is a Staff Drilling Data Analyst in the Fayetteville Shale Drilling group of Southwestern
Energy. He uses his experience with data processing, analysis and presentation to improve
Southwestern’s work in the natural gas production and mid-stream market.

Stephen Fonash, Ph.D.
Stephen Fonash serves as the director of the Center for Nanotechnology Education and Utili-
zation (CNEU), of the National Science Foundation Advanced Technology Education Center,
and of the Nanofabrication Manufacturing Technology Partnership.
Ashraf Ghori
Comic book artist, filmmaker and entrepreneur based in Dubai UAE, Ashraf is also the CEO
of Xpanse CGI, a specialist design and animation studio producing films, TV commercials,
brand design, illustration, websites, and online social presence.
Steven Gonzalez, M.S.
Steven has over 23 years of experience in the aerospace industry. He is the Director, NASA/
Aerospace Acceleration, the Loaned Executive from NASA/Johnson Space Center, and the
Deputy of the Advanced Planning Office at the NASA/Johnson Space Center (JSC).
Glenn Gutierrez, J.D.
Glenn is a Houston-based serial entrepreneur who serves as the Co-Founder and COO of
PopScreen.com and RentalPerks.com. PopScreen is in the business of making videos “Go
Viral” and currently helps Fortune 500 Companies and Brands to help them achieve this goal.
Peter Han
Peter has consulted with large complex manufacturing firms in the areas of innovation, orga-
nizational development and development of talent for the past 20 years. He brings this experi-
ence to the cultivation of creativity and innovation in children, youth and adults.
Dale Harrison
Dale has 30 years of experience in the fields of science and technology development. He began
his career as an experimental physicist working in the field of superconductivity and founded
his first startup company at age 24. He is now Founder and President of enGrant Scientific.
Robert Harriss, Ph.D., M.A.
Robert Harriss is President and CEO of the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC),
an institution devoted to sustainability science, engineering, and education. He is an educator
and researcher with a passion for creating collaborative, interdisciplinary environments
Linda Highfield, Ph.D.
Linda Highfield is the Director of Quantitative Research for the St. Luke’s Episcopal Health
Charities (the Charities), a nonprofit public charity formed by an endowment from the St.
Luke’s Episcopal Health System, located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas.

A Dozen Surprises About the Future of Work
In this keynote session, Andy Hines will bring together the experience and knowledge he has
earned as an organizational, consulting, and academic futurist to provide insight about how
emerging technologies are aligning to impact our economic well-being and overall quality of
life. Professor Hines suggests a dozen potentially surprising outcomes regarding the future of
work and how existing trends and developments might unfold in ways that may seem “sur-
prising” – if you are not paying attention. By thinking about these potential outcomes now,
audience members will be able to anticipate, prepare, and be ready for the future of work.
Dr. Austin Lane, Welcome
Lauded as an innovator and visionary leader, Austin Lane’s career in higher education is
marked by a variety of successive leadership roles and professional achievements, affording
him experience in virtually every aspect of administration and teaching. Before joining Lone
Star College-Montgomery as President, Lane served as vice president for student affairs at
Tyler Junior College.
Gil Staley, Introduction
Gil worked for Delta Airlines from 1989 to 2004, filling the position of District Sales Man-
ager before leaving to join The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership as Chief
Operating Officer.  He has served as the organization’s Director since 2009.  Gil graduated
from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelors of Business Administration.
Jaye Thompson, Opening Remarks
Jaye Thompson has more than 20 years of experience in clinical research and currently serves
as Senior Vice President of Clinical Development and Regulatory Affairs for Opexa Thera-
peutics, Inc. Dr. Thompson serves on the Executive Board of the Gulf Coast Regional Center
of Innovation and Commercialization, among others. She has a bachelor’s degree in Applied
Mathematics from Texas A&M University and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Biostatistics from the
University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

Brian Autio, R.P.L.S.
Brian is the Senior Surveyor for BP Gulf of Mexico GPO - Subsea Survey. He has more than
25 years of industry experience in geospatial information management including ten years
with BP Houston Crisis Center- 50+ activations.
Cody Marx Bailey
Cody works on many fronts to bring the technology and arts communities together in creative
ways. He co-founded the Creative Space, co-founded the BIL Conference and is organizer of
Rock The Republic: A Spectacle of Sight and Sound.
Daniel Bally, A.I.C.P., G.I.S.P.
A GIS Supervisor in the City of Houston’s Planning and Development Department, Daniel
has nearly a decade of experience. Prior to joining the City, he worked for an engineering firm
focusing on transportation planning. He is a past presenter at the Texas GIS Forum.
Barry Cohen
Barry is the founder of the National Algae Association in The Woodlands and a member of
the Biofuel Capital Partners, a private equity fund for biodiesel and other biofuels-related
technology and production companies.
Clifford C. Dacso, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A.
Clifford Dacso has been helping patients and clinicians acquire, structure, and use informa-
tion to improve health care for over 35 years. He is founder and Executive Director of the
Abramson Center for the Future of Health.
Paula S. deWitte, J.D., Ph.D., P.E.
Paula is a serial entrepreneur who has started or run operations in several high tech start-ups.
After a successful technical career, she entered law school at the age of 53 and now maintains
two businesses – a technical consulting firm and her law practice.
Robert K. Ehrmann, M.B.A., M.S.
Robert (Bob) is the Director of Education and Outreach at the Penn State Center for
Nanotechnology Education and Utilization (CNEU). The CNEU is the home to the NSF
National Nanotechnology Applications and Career Knowledge (NACK) Center.
Javier Fernandez-Han
Javier has been an inventor since age seven. In 2008, he founded “Inventors without Borders”
to encourage teens to solve real-world problems. Most recently, he launched Innovation
Foundry – MIE to collaborate with My India Empowered, an NGO in Mumbai, India.

Lane From The President The campus Set on the campus of Lone Star College-Montgomery, the conference offers you access to the resources of one of the larg- est community college districts in Texas. LSC-Montgomery is a 520,000-square-foot comprehensive college located on 210 acres between The Woodlands and Conroe on College Park Drive (Hwy. 242). The college recently opened three new buildings­— a General Academic Center, a Health Science Center, and a Music Hall, along with the new LSC-Conroe Center, located in north Conroe off FM 3083. Dorinda Rose An IT Business Analyst, Dorinda is a member of NAPW and PMI and currently works for an international Architecture/Engineering firm in Houston. During her career, she has taken on many IT roles. Today, she is a driving force for cross-training among the IT Department. Coleman Sisson Coleman is the CEO of BubbleUp, LLC in The Woodlands, TX. He has a BS degree in Data Processing and Quantitative Analysis from the University of Arkansas. He has over 30 years of experience in the high-tech industry and has worked with Jimmy Buffett since 1989. Laura Spingola, M.B.A. Laura is Founder and President of Trade Resources Ltd., a Chicago-based market development company that provides international management, marketing, training and reporting services for business. She has conducted business in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Dayna Steele Aerospace industry advocate and wife of retired NASA pilot Charlie Justiz, Dana is the creator of several companies, a media strategist, blogs for Fast Company and is the author of Rock to the Top: What I Learned about Success from the World’s Greatest Rock Stars. William Thurmond, M.S. Will is the founder and CEO of Emerging Markets Online, a business strategy and market intelligence firm focused on the future of global energy, algae and biofuels markets. He is an entrepreneur and has consulted for dozens of Fortune 500 and emerging tech companies. Matthew Wettergreen, Ph.D. Matthew Wettergreen has a formal education in bioengineering with a specialization in bio- mechanics and organ printing and an informal education in non-profit/arts management and marketing, community organizing, and digital strategy. LaVerne Williams, A.I.A., LEED A.P. LaVerne is an Architect, Building Ecologist, Bioneer, a LEED Accredited Professional, and the CEO & Founder of ENVIRONMENT ASSOCIATES, Architects & Consultants, He has almost 40 years of experience as a leader and pioneer of green building architectural practice.   • 3. 2 The Symposium Co-sponsored by the college’s Business and Social Sciences Division and the Biotechnology Institute, the High Tech Conference is designed to familiarize participants with Texas’ high tech eco-system, while highlighting emerging opportunities within the state’s technology-driven industries. The event is designed to educate participants about the ‘business’ of technology and the roles that technologies play in meeting the region’s economic needs. This day-long event is hosted under the umbrella of the StarTech Symposium, a three day affair that includes a job fair, a workshop on nanotechnology and an algae certification course. With more than 45 presenters and exhibitors, all focused on the most current industry trends and technology-related scientific breakthroughs, the conference provides on-site opportunities that will motivate, challenge and inspire anyone who is working in or thinking about a career in an industry driven by energy, science or technology. Moderated by  Steven González, Director, NASA/Aerospace Acceleration and Loaned Executive from NASA/Johnson Space Center PANELISTS Sarah M. Worthy, Schipul - Sarah has over 12 years experience in marketing and business development within the technology and web industries. She also volunteers as the Houston Curator for the StartupDigest, organizes Houston StartupWeekend, and volunteers with SpaceUp Houston. Holly Griffith, ISS flight controller (OSO) and former Shuttle flight controller. Holly has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from McNeese State University. She began work as a Shuttle flight controller in the Electrical Power System (EGIL) in 2004. After Shuttle ended, she moved over to the ISS program as an Operations Support Officer (OSO) flight controller. Justin Kugler, ISS National Lab Implementation Lead, SAIC. Justin works at NASA Johnson Space Center in the International Space Station National Laboratory Office, where he coordinates research planning and program integration for commercial payloads and education projects. He studied Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M and Mechanical Engineering at Rice. Emerging Technologies Moderated by Linnea Fletcher, Ph.D. Linnea holds degrees in Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of California and a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Texas. She began a career in edu- cation at Austin Community College in 1991 and in 1997, brought biotechnology training to ACC, serving as its first Department Chair until Fall 2008. Daniel Kainer, Ph.D., M.S. An e-commerce entrepreneur, when not serving as the Director of the Biotechnology Institute at LSC-Montgomery, Daniel Kainer spends his time becoming proficient at new media tech- nologies and teaching other techpreneurs how to develop their own e-commerce businesses. George King George has worked in the energy sector for 35 years, starting in oil and gas exploration, pro- duction and related segments of hydrocarbon processing. He has experience with nuclear, coal and natural gas fired steam plants, hydrogen fuel cells, geothermal, thermal solar, and more. Katrina Kokoska, M.S. Katrina is the Manager of the Creative Services Division at Schipul - The Web Marketing Company where she oversees client web marketing initiatives including strategy development, ongoing content creation, social media marketing, account management and client training. Brian Lang Brian is CEO of Seniors In Touch and is a 20 year veteran of building successful online communities and enacting Social Media strategies. For over a decade he served national faith groups as an executive advising and deploying online communication platforms. Rajiv Malkan, Ph.D., M.S. Rajiv Malkan has over 25 years of experience in higher education. His speciality is education management. In 2010, he was the recipient of The University of Texas at Austin, NISOD Excellence Award and Lone Star College-Montgomery Faculty Excellence Award. Andrew W. Nunn Andrew is the art director of Operation: Zeus, a multi-layered non-profit organization for Veterans, which is in the process of filming a documentary about this generations’ Veterans. This venture receives tremendous support from social media, especially Kickstarter. Van Oler, M.S. A microwave radio and network design engineer under contract to AT&T Mobility, Van is responsible for increasing efficiency and profitability of wireless networks through topology analysis across radio, copper, and fiber transmission systems. He also has 14 years of experi- ence in military communications. Mark Reynolds, M.S. Mark is a Staff Drilling Data Analyst in the Fayetteville Shale Drilling group of Southwestern Energy. He uses his experience with data processing, analysis and presentation to improve Southwestern’s work in the natural gas production and mid-stream market. The Speakers continued 9
  • 4. 8 Stephen Fonash, Ph.D. Stephen Fonash serves as the director of the Center for Nanotechnology Education and Utili- zation (CNEU), of the National Science Foundation Advanced Technology Education Center, and of the Nanofabrication Manufacturing Technology Partnership. Ashraf Ghori Comic book artist, filmmaker and entrepreneur based in Dubai UAE, Ashraf is also the CEO of Xpanse CGI, a specialist design and animation studio producing films, TV commercials, brand design, illustration, websites, and online social presence. Steven Gonzalez, M.S. Steven has over 23 years of experience in the aerospace industry. He is the Director, NASA/ Aerospace Acceleration, the Loaned Executive from NASA/Johnson Space Center, and the Deputy of the Advanced Planning Office at the NASA/Johnson Space Center (JSC). Glenn Gutierrez, J.D. Glenn is a Houston-based serial entrepreneur who serves as the Co-Founder and COO of PopScreen.com and RentalPerks.com. PopScreen is in the business of making videos “Go Viral” and currently helps Fortune 500 Companies and Brands to help them achieve this goal. Peter Han Peter has consulted with large complex manufacturing firms in the areas of innovation, orga- nizational development and development of talent for the past 20 years. He brings this experi- ence to the cultivation of creativity and innovation in children, youth and adults. Dale Harrison Dale has 30 years of experience in the fields of science and technology development. He began his career as an experimental physicist working in the field of superconductivity and founded his first startup company at age 24. He is now Founder and President of enGrant Scientific. Robert Harriss, Ph.D., M.A. Robert Harriss is President and CEO of the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC), an institution devoted to sustainability science, engineering, and education. He is an educator and researcher with a passion for creating collaborative, interdisciplinary environments Linda Highfield, Ph.D. Linda Highfield is the Director of Quantitative Research for the St. Luke’s Episcopal Health Charities (the Charities), a nonprofit public charity formed by an endowment from the St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System, located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. The Speakers continued Andy Hines Lecturer/Executive-in-Residence, University of Houston Futures Studies Principal, Hinesight A Dozen Surprises About the Future of Work In this keynote session, Andy Hines will bring together the experience and knowledge he has earned as an organizational, consulting, and academic futurist to provide insight about how emerging technologies are aligning to impact our economic well-being and overall quality of life. Professor Hines suggests a dozen potentially surprising outcomes regarding the future of work and how existing trends and developments might unfold in ways that may seem “sur- prising” – if you are not paying attention. By thinking about these potential outcomes now, audience members will be able to anticipate, prepare, and be ready for the future of work. Dr. Austin Lane, Welcome Lauded as an innovator and visionary leader, Austin Lane’s career in higher education is marked by a variety of successive leadership roles and professional achievements, affording him experience in virtually every aspect of administration and teaching. Before joining Lone Star College-Montgomery as President, Lane served as vice president for student affairs at Tyler Junior College. Gil Staley, Introduction Gil worked for Delta Airlines from 1989 to 2004, filling the position of District Sales Man- ager before leaving to join The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership as Chief Operating Officer.  He has served as the organization’s Director since 2009.  Gil graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelors of Business Administration. Jaye Thompson, Opening Remarks Jaye Thompson has more than 20 years of experience in clinical research and currently serves as Senior Vice President of Clinical Development and Regulatory Affairs for Opexa Thera- peutics, Inc. Dr. Thompson serves on the Executive Board of the Gulf Coast Regional Center of Innovation and Commercialization, among others. She has a bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics from Texas A&M University and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Biostatistics from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Cody Marx Bailey Cody works on many fronts to bring the technology and arts communities together in creative ways. He co-founded the Creative Space, co-founded the BIL Conference and is organizer of Rock The Republic: A Spectacle of Sight and Sound. Daniel Bally, A.I.C.P., G.I.S.P. A GIS Supervisor in the City of Houston’s Planning and Development Department, Daniel has nearly a decade of experience. Prior to joining the City, he worked for an engineering firm focusing on transportation planning. He is a past presenter at the Texas GIS Forum. Barry Cohen Barry is the founder of the National Algae Association in The Woodlands and a member of the Biofuel Capital Partners, a private equity fund for biodiesel and other biofuels-related technology and production companies. Clifford C. Dacso, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A. Clifford Dacso has been helping patients and clinicians acquire, structure, and use informa- tion to improve health care for over 35 years. He is founder and Executive Director of the Abramson Center for the Future of Health. Paula S. deWitte, J.D., Ph.D., P.E. Paula is a serial entrepreneur who has started or run operations in several high tech start-ups. After a successful technical career, she entered law school at the age of 53 and now maintains two businesses – a technical consulting firm and her law practice. Robert K. Ehrmann, M.B.A., M.S. Robert (Bob) is the Director of Education and Outreach at the Penn State Center for Nanotechnology Education and Utilization (CNEU). The CNEU is the home to the NSF National Nanotechnology Applications and Career Knowledge (NACK) Center. Javier Fernandez-Han Javier has been an inventor since age seven. In 2008, he founded “Inventors without Borders” to encourage teens to solve real-world problems. Most recently, he launched Innovation Foundry – MIE to collaborate with My India Empowered, an NGO in Mumbai, India. The Speakers 7
