2. INTRODUCTION
Bengal is a land of rich culture and heritage, which has its
roots on Bengali Literature, Music,fine arts,cinemaand
dramas.
Different geographical regions ofWest Bengalshows subtle as
well as pronounced variation in different Socio culturalaspects.
West Bengal’scapitalKolkata was the birthplaceof modern
Indian literary and artistic
thought,and is referred to as the“cultural capitalof India”.
3. LITERATURE
The Bengali languageboasts arich literary heritage,shared with neighbouring
Bangladesh.West Bengal has a long tradition in folk literature.
In the nineteenth and twentiethcentury, Bengaliliterature was modernized inthe
works of authors such as Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay,Michael Madhusudan
Dutt, Rabindranath Tagore,Kazi Nazrul Islam,and Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay.
Coupled with social reforms ledby Ram Mohan Roy,SwamiVivekananda, and others,
this constituted amajorpart of the Bengal Renaissance.
The middleand latterparts of the 20th century witnessed the arrival of post-
modernism, aswellasliterary movements such as those espoused by the Kallol
movement,hungryalists and the little magazines

As of 2020,Bengalifilmshavewon India’sannualNationalFilmAward forBest FeatureFilm
twenty-twotimesinsixty sevenyears,thehighestamongallIndianlanguages.
5. MUSIC
The Baultradition isaunique heritageof Bengalifolkmusic,which has also been influencedby
regional music traditions.
Other folk music forms include Kabigaan,Gombhira,Bhawaiya,kirtans,andGajan festivalmusic.
The stateisrecognised for itsappreciationof rabindrasangeet (songs written byRabindranath
Tagore) and Indian classicalmusic.
Nazrul Geeti is another classical music of Bengal,which is written andcomposed by poet Kazi
Nazrul Islam.He was person in Bengal music who created the first Bengali Ghazals.
UNESCO selectedThe Rural Craft Hub of Bengal to showcase their artwork in Paris in 2015.

• West Bengalis famousfor its culture andfestivals are aninevitable part of this culture.
Some festivals are celebratedstatewide, while others arelocalinnature.Thereare also
variousothervillagefairsandseasonaltribalfestivals.DurgaPujais the biggestandmost
importantfestivalofWest Bengal.
• The diverse ethnic populaceof DarjeelingHimalayanhillregion celebrates several local
festivalssuch as Losar,Dusshera or Fulpati,Tihar,RamNavami,MagheSankranti,Chotrul
Duchen,BuddhaJayanti,TendongLho Rumfaat,Eidal-Fitretc.
