This document discusses the history and advancement of transportation and its importance to the tourism industry. It outlines several major modes of transportation over time, including stagecoaches, water travel, rail travel, automobiles, motor coaches, and air travel. The advent of each new form of transportation helped expand tourism by increasing accessibility and lowering costs of travel. Transportation is seen as integral to tourism by bringing visitors to destinations and facilitating travel within places. Overall improvements in transportation have played a key role in the growth and profits of the tourism industry.
Horsecars were the earliest form of public transit in cities until the late 19th century. Frank Sprague then invented the electric streetcar system using overhead wires in Richmond, Virginia in 1887. As streetcars grew in popularity, they increased passenger capacity by becoming longer, wider, and operating in trains of multiple connected cars. Interurban streetcars connected cities and towns. Later streamlined PCC streetcars and modern light rail systems emerged. However, as personal automobiles became more common, streetcar systems declined and were eventually abandoned in most places by the mid-20th century.
The earliest form of public transit within cities was the horse car in 1828. Horsecars were replaced by cable cars and elevated trains in larger cities due to horses being slow and expensive. Frank J. Sprague's 1887 invention of the overhead wire and motor mount system for streetcars helped replace horsecars with electric streetcars. The last regularly operated horsecar transit line in the US was in Pittsburgh in 1923. As automobiles became more popular in the early 20th century, streetcar companies declined and tracks were removed.
Early attempts at steam locomotives in the late 1700s and early 1800s struggled with breakdowns and weak power. Richard Trevithick built the first steam locomotive to run on rails in 1804, pulling 10 tons of iron but breaking down after 100 yards. John Blenkinsop's 1811 design added extra wheels with cogs for better grip. "Puffing Billy" built in 1813 hauled coal in Northumberland for 50 years. The Liverpool to Manchester Railway competition in 1829 was won by George Stephenson, launching the railway mania era of the 1830s-40s when Britain's rail network expanded rapidly.
The document provides a brief history of train travel, starting with the first train in India in 1853 from Bombay to Thane, and discusses some early engineering feats like the Darjeeling loop constructed in 1880. It then discusses the opening of the London Underground in 1863 as the world's first underground railway system, and the opening of the Buenos Aires metro in 1913 as the oldest in Latin America. Finally, it mentions that the future of travel will involve riding trains in Bengaluru with a clean conscience.

The document summarizes the key components and systems of the AT3LR lunar rover:
The AT3LR lunar rover uses lithium-ion batteries and solar panels for power. It has tracks for locomotion and uses a lidar system and 3D MiniLIDAR sensor to map its surroundings. An UDOO prototyping board handles processing, communication, and software development. Programming is done through the Arduino IDE integrated with the UDOO board. The rover is not autonomous and requires human commands to operate safely in unknown lunar environments.

Universal Design for Postsecondary Students with DisabilitiesSarah Dutton
Postsecondary students with disabilities’ access to campus support services, trained faculty, and accommodations was examined in order to explore opportunities for applying universal design (UD) in postsecondary institutions. These students are not fully satisfied with the campus support services they receive and the accommodations available to them (Dowrick et al., 2005; Izzo et al., 2008; Reinschmiedt et al., 2013). Although specialized postsecondary programs for students with disabilities exist, these programs are not inclusive and limit students with disabilities’ access to a typical college experience in which they can interact with and learn from their peers (Papay & Bambara, 2012; Uditsky & Hughson, 2012). Training postsecondary campus support personnel and faculty in UD principles has the potential to alleviate some of the barriers to obtaining postsecondary education that students with disabilities face (Burgstahler & Moore, 2009; Dallas et al., 2014; Embry et al., 2005; Fang et al., 2006; Fleming, 2002; Hetzroni & Schrieber, 2004; Izzo et al., 2008; McGuire et al., 2006; Thomas & McKay, 2010).
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive functioning. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms.
This document discusses 7 technologies impacting higher education: 1) virtual learning environments like VITAL, 2) social media, 3) screencasts and e-lectures, 4) simulations and interactive multimedia, 5) classroom technologies like clickers, 6) e-assessment tools, and 7) MOOCs and open educational resources. It also notes that students expect minimum standards from virtual learning environments and are looking for more consistent use of technology like lecture capture and clickers to enhance their learning. The document provides an activity and additional resources about technology-enhanced learning strategies.

This document discusses key theories of media language used to communicate meaning to audiences. It introduces Ferdinand de Saussure's concept of the signifier and signified, how signs have both a literal object and associated concept. Roland Barthes expanded on this with denotation, the literal meaning, and connotation, meanings drawn from cultural/social knowledge. Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding looks at producers encoding intended meanings that audiences can decode as a preferred, negotiated, or oppositional reading. The document uses examples to illustrate these theories for analyzing how media texts communicate and how audiences interpret them.

This document provides information about the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It includes details about the area, capital, population, languages spoken, climate, history, and top tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh. Some of the most popular places mentioned are Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Chamba, Kangra, Palampur, Kasauli, Kinnaur, Khajjiar, Kufri, and Kullu. Indian architecture under colonial rule was influenced by many styles. In the princely states, Mughal architecture declined and new styles emerged blending regional elements with British classical and Gothic styles. Princely palaces featured elements like durbar halls, rooms for European guests, and oil paintings. New towns incorporated British features like clock towers alongside indigenous styles. Regional variations also occurred as in Jaisalmer's havelis and Jaipur's geometric planning. Under the British, architecture expressed the ambiguous status of princely rulers retaining tradition but creating a modern India. Styles included Indo-Saracenic, Renaissance-Oriental, and Indo-eclectic fusions.
The document outlines a three step approach called "OOFing" that can be used by choral directors to improve vocal tone when acting as de facto voice teachers. The three steps are Open Body, Open Throat, and Forward Articulation. Open Body refers to proper posture and breathing technique using the diaphragm to fill the lungs. Open Throat encourages a relaxed throat for resonance. Forward Articulation involves loose articulation of vowels and consonants. Using these simple concepts in rehearsal can significantly and immediately improve vocal tone for both solo and choral singers.

A Cursory Look On Shimla Toy Train:

Travelling with kids? Wish to give them a culture rich

your best bet. At a first glance the Shimla toy train looks
like a huge snake winding on the hillsides, creeping its
way to meet the Queen of Hills, that is Shimla.
3. Kalka Shimla railway has a
curious history. By 1830
Shimla emerged as an
important base for the
Britishers in India. Hence,
Britishers put all their energies
to develop this strategic point
in an all round manner.
Eventually, in 1864 Shimla was
made the summer-capital of
British India. Obviously, a
viable link between Shimla and
Delhi as well as the northern
plains of India became
essential.
