Playing a digital media is something complex, that requires non-trivial code. Such code is likely to have unknown security issues. It is therefore unwise to trust such code to handle untrusted data, such as a cat video[1] from the internet.
One solution that could be applied to GStreamer is to run the non-trivial code inside a sandbox. Gillaume has experimented a bit[2] with the idea and would like to expose his preliminary results.

Playing in the sandbox - GStreamer security (GStreamer Conference 2012)Igalia
By Guillaume Emont.
GStreamer is a big and successful project that implements complex formats. We use it to read media streams that sometimes come from untrusted sources.
The size and complexity of GStreamer and all the format implementations it brings means that the presence of security bugs in a media playback pipeline is not totally unlikely. An attacker could forge a stream that would exploit such a bug so that he can execute code of his making in the context where the exploited code was running.
A common way to alleviate this kind of issue is to run the software handling untrusted data in a context where its privileges are very limited, so that a successful exploit of a bug in the software would only grant the attacker execution rights in that limited context. We call such a context a sandbox.
I have run some experiments[1] with setuid-sandbox[2], a stand-alone version of the sandboxing system used by chrome on GNU/Linux, that shows the feasibility of running at least part of a pipeline in a sandbox. In this talk, I will explain this work[3], its limitations and discuss what can be done to improve on it.

The State Of Israel And The Muslim World 22166GZ-Israel
This document summarizes the state of Israel and its relationship with the Muslim world. It notes that there are over 1.1 billion Muslims globally compared to Israel being the only Jewish state and 1,000 times smaller in size than Muslim countries. However, Muslim countries have gone to war against Israel's existence and some deny its history and Jewish ties to the land, despite Jerusalem being the ancient capital and center of Judaism for thousands of years before the Muslim faith existed. The document argues that Israel has a right to exist, yet its small size continues to be intolerable to many Muslims.

Software geeks fear hardware. It's a fact of life: code is easy to write and easy to change, but hardware catches on fire if you put it together wrong. But this is changing! Hardware is becoming cheaper and easier to work with every day and can often be managed with the same tools you use to deploy code to the cloud. Join self-described software guy and hardware-phobe Ronald McCollam for a guided trip from the safe world of web development to the scary lands of hardware and back again. We'll see how easy it can be to make the leap from managed code to microprocessors!

Christian Sander (Dear Reality): The Future of Sound: Augmented Audio and Virtual Acoustics
"Sound is 50% of the experience!“ Hollywood legend George Lucas once said. And what is true for film, applies even more for any immersive media. 3D positional audio has been accepted to be one of the key technologies for any VR/AR application. But especially for a convincing AR experience the augmented sound has to match the real environment in many different aspects. So far we have seen a lot of different space in VR/AR, but now we need to make them audible for the users, too!
This document provides an introduction to building virtual reality display systems for hobbyists and educators. It discusses the history and applications of VR, key engineering challenges in the field, and gives an overview of the Stanford EE 267 course where students build their own VR head-mounted displays. The document covers topics such as the graphics pipeline, sensor fusion for tracking, and spatial sound. It also profiles the open-source VRduino hardware platform used in the course for orientation tracking, input interfacing, and more. Overall, the document serves as a guide for those interested in developing VR technology through a do-it-yourself approach.

The document also provides examples of a basic LED blinking sketch, using mesh networking and LWM messaging between nodes, and discusses some initial experiences with Pinoccio.
Roland Memisevic at AI Frontiers: Common sense video understanding at TwentyBNAI Frontiers
Deep learning has evolved not linearly but through a series of step-functions: sudden unexpected outbreaks of capability, which fundamentally changed the envelope of what computers are able to do. At TwentyBN, we have created spatio-temporal video models and data infrastructure that allowed us to grow approximately one million labeled videos showing everyday common-sense scenes and situations - many of them extremely subtle. This allowed us to successfully train neural networks end-to-end on a wide range of action understanding tasks, that neither hand-engineering nor neural networks had appeared anywhere near solving just a few months ago. I will show how these recognition tasks now drive commercial value at TwentyBN, and how they drive our long-term AI agenda for learning common sense world knowledge through video.

Creating Art with a Raspberry Pi - Stephanie Nemeth - Codemotion Amsterdam 2017Codemotion
Coding has opened up a channel for self-expression and experimentation that I never imagined possible. Inspired by a visit to an art museum, I created an interactive LED art project. This project started out as a challenge to become better at writing javascript, but I found a new passion working with hardware despite a severe lack of technical knowledge. I’ll share my story of building with hardware for the first time and how I found ways to overcome my lack of skills and confidence so that you’ll want to tackle your hardware project and won’t give up on it before you ever get started either.
