Vacation at Brewster.
• When Perkins Institution closed for summer, Helen
and her teacher went to Brewster, on Cape Cod for
spending the vacation with Mrs. Hopkins.
• Helen had read about the sea in her book
“Our World” and was excited to visit it.
Helen’s first approach to the sea.
• When Helen came at the seashore, she hurriedly plunged into the water.
• She was enjoying the water, when suddenly her foot got struck on a rock.
• Her joyful excitement changed into fear as she started drowning.
• Finally, she got threw back to the shore, and was supported by
the embrace of her teacher.
• After she got recovered from the panic, she asked her teacher- “Who
put the salt in the water?”
• Helen never lost the fascination for the sea.
• She noticed the movement of waves and their affect on pebbles and the beach.
• And feeling the dashing of waves against the rocks and sending up a shower of
spray on her.
• After Helen recovered from the incident, she was enjoying sitting on a big rock.
• She felt it was great fun to feel wave dashing against the rock.
The Horseshoe Crab.
• One day, Miss Sullivan drew Helen’s attention to a sea organism–Horseshoe crab.
• Helen was so fascinated that she carried the heavy crab all the way home.
• At home, she carefully placed it on a trough of water.
• But to her surprise, it disappeared the next morning.
• Helen slowly but surely realized her mistake, of separating the crab
from it’s habitat.
• She felt happy thinking that it had possibly safely travelled to its home.
• Helen thought of making the crab her pet.
