TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED IN PLANTING PROPAGATION
A. Tools for Cleaning the Land
1. Bolo - used for cutting and splitting wood or bamboo; it is also used for cutting
grass.
2. Axe - has a wedge-like cutting edge; it is used for cutting edges and stumps of
tree.
3. Pick mattock - used for digging and breaking hard and compact soil; the pointed
part is used for digging out stumps of trees and stones.

B. Tools Used for Digging the Soil
1. Grub hoe - similar to the garden hoe; this is used for digging and
breaking hard and compact soil.
2. Spade - used for constructing ditches or canals; it is also used for
turning the soil and mixing the compost and manure into the soil.
3. Shovel - used for working on loose soil, for digging holes and canals
or ditches where the soil is soft and loose.

C. Tools Used for Pulverizing, Leveling, and Field Layout
1. Meter Stick - used for measuring distances and for laying out
garden plots.
2. String - used to mark and put the limits of plots; it is useful in
making straight rows.
3. Rake - a long-handled tool with teeth at one end, used to level
and pulverize soil.

D. Tools Used for Cultivating, Weeding, and Fertilizing
1. Combination shovel cultivator - for setting seedlings.
2. Hand fork - for loosening the soil around the plants.
3. Hand weeder - for weeding and loosening the soil around
the plants.

E. Tools Used for Transplanting Vegetable Seedlings and Fruit Trees
1. Transplanting trowel - for making holes in the seedbed into which
the seedlings are planted.
2. Hand trowel - a light hand tool used for loosening the soil around
the growing plants.

Method
For proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment,
observe the following:
1. Wash or clean the tools before keeping them in the tool
rack.
2. Keep the tools dry in a tool rack when they are not in
use.
3. Oil, grease, and paint the iron parts of the tools.
4. Repair broken or damaged tools immediately.
5. Sharpen cutting tools frequently.
