Manual LinkedIn Groups
How do I create a group?
Last Reviewed: 09/06/2013
You can start a new group by filling out the fields on the Create a Group page.
You’ll be the owner and manager of any group you create, but you can also assign other members to be
managers or moderators.
To create a group:
1. Move your cursor over Interests at the top of your homepage and select Groups.
2. Click the Create a group button on the right.
3. Fill in the requested information. A red asterisk means it’s required.
4. Click the Create.. button to create your group as an open group or a members-only group.
What are the differences between members-only groups and open groups?
Last Reviewed: 12/10/2013
The main difference is who can see the discussions. Members-only group discussions can only be seen by
other group members. Open group discussions can be seen by anyone on the web and can be shared on
other social networking platforms.
In members-only groups:
• There’s a padlock icon next to the group name.
• You must be a LinkedIn member to join.
• Discussions won’t show up in search engine results.
• Discussions are visible to group members only.
• The group manager has the option to switch to an open group. This change can only be made once
and cannot be undone. Members are notified if the group is switched to an open group.
In open groups:
• There isn’t a padlock icon next to the group name.
• You must be a LinkedIn member to join.
• Discussions created before switching to an open group are archived and visible to group members
only.
• Discussions created after switching to an open group are searchable and visible to anyone on the web.
• Discussions can be shared using social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.
• Group managers have the option to allow LinkedIn members who aren’t group members to contribu-
te.
Note: Currently, subgroups can’t be open groups but we’re considering this option for the future.
If you don’t want to be in an open group, you can leave the group at any time.
What are the differences between group owners, managers, and moderators?
Last Reviewed: 04/13/2014
If you create a group, you’re the group owner unless you’ve transferred ownership of the group to someo-
ne else.
As the owner you can change the role of a member to be a manager or moderator to help share in the
management duties of your group.
Group owner - Has control over membership, discussions, settings, subgroups, rules and more. They can
also transfer ownership of a group to another group manager.
Group manager - Has the same access to the group as the owner except they can’t close or transfer
ownership of the group.
Group moderator - Limited to monitoring discussions and comments and managing submission and mo-
deration queues. They can also feature a discussion.
All 3 roles can:
• Manage group submissions and moderation queues
• Monitor and delete group discussions and comments
• Add a featured discussion as “Manager’s Choice”
What are some of the general limits for LinkedIn Groups?
Last Reviewed: 12/05/2013
Various limits for LinkedIn Groups are listed below. We believe these limits are large enough to accommo-
date those with a wide variety of interests and yet still encourage quality group management and engage-
ment.

• How many subgroups can I be a member of at one time? 50.
• How many groups can I be a moderator of at one time? 50.
• How many people can I follow at one time? 5,000.
Group limits per main (parent) group:
• How many owners can a group have? 1.
• How many managers can a group have? 10.
• How many moderators can be in a given group? 50.
• How many members can be in a given group? 20,000 (maximum default).
Group limits per subgroup:

• How many owners can a subgroup have? 1.
• How many managers can a given subgroup have? 10.
• How many moderators can a given subgroup have? 50.

Last Reviewed: 09/06/2013
You can leave a group at any time through your group settings.
1. Move your cursor over Interests at the top of your homepage and select Groups.
2. Click the group’s name.
3. Move your cursor over the Member button near the top right, and the text will change to Leave.
