Pressure garments are tight fitting elastic garments (shirts, trousers, gloves, face masks) that put pressure on the layers of skin after a burn has healed. The pressure garment acts as an outer layer of skin, putting pressure on the healing skin helping it to flatten out and therefore preventing it from developing into thick scars.

3. Pressure garments are tight fitting elastic
garments (shirts, trousers, gloves, face
mask) that are worn to put pressure on
the skin layers after a burn has healed to
prevent or reduce scarring.
4. Why do you need a pressure garment?
In a burn, the top layer of skin is
gone so it is not able to put pressure
on the skin below, as it would in
healthy skin.
Without pressure on the skin, very
thick and stiff scarring, called
hypertrophic scarring, can form
after a burn. This type of scarring
can limit movement and be very
unsightly.
5. The pressure from the garment helps to prevent
scars from forming or helps to flatten out scars
that have already began to develop.
The garments help to reduce itching of the skin
as it heals.
They also provide good sun protection as the
healed skin will sunburn easily.
13. The garments are to be worn 23 hours a day. They
are removed to bathe and put lotion on the skin and
then the garment is reapplied.
The patient will wear the garment up to a year or
more until the scar has flattened and is no longer
maturing.
14. Patient is a 25 year old male who was injured in January 2010 when a
petrol bomb exploded in a building he was standing beside. He sustained
burns on both arms and hands, his face, and minor burns on one leg. He
was treated at a hospital in Jos and released one month later. He came for
outpatient treatment in June. When he arrived, he already had developed
hypertrophic scarring on both arms and hands. He had a contracture of
the right elbow and had difficulty with movements of both wrist and
hands.
His treatment consisted of range of motion exercises for both arms and
hands, scar massage, and pressure garments. He has worn the garments
for ten months and has had reduction of the scarring on both arms and
hands. He is still wearing the garments at this time.
16. Patient is a 40 year old man who works for Nesco. He was
electrocuted while working on a power line. He was brought to the
hospital immediately for treatment. He sustained severe burns to
the back of his left shoulder and back of his head. He lost portions
of his shoulder muscles as the wound was all the way down to the
lung tissue. He spent about five months in the hospital before
discharged.
His treatment consisted of range of motion exercises for the left
shoulder, scar massage, and a pressure garment when the wound
healed. He wore the garment for one year and it helped reduce
thick scars from forming and made the skin flatten out.
19. We have two tailors trained
in making pressure
garments.
They are located at
Gidan Bege (House of
Hope).
Fill out a consult with the
diagnosis and request for a
pressure garment.
