The RulesStill Apply
As we prepare totransitiontoonline instructional deliveryinresponse tothe COVID-19crisis,itis
importantthatyou understandthatjustbecause the modalityof yourcourse maybe changing,the rules
do not. The legal andcompliance frameworkfor faculty,staff,andstudentsremainsthe same
regardlessof the methodof instructional delivery. The StudentHandbook,Codeof Conduct,Faculty
Handbook,boardpolicies,andadministrative regulationsapply. Likewise,the FamilyEducational Rights
and PrivacyAct (FERPA),the AmericanswithDisabilitiesActanditsamendments(ADA),Title IX,TitleVII
and otherlawsshouldalwaysbe followed.

As we move coursesonline,we have the obligationtomake themaccessibletostudentswith
disabilities.We understandyoumayhave nevertaughtanonline course,sothismaybe new to you.It is
important,therefore,thatwe focusourenergieswhere theyare neededinthe moment,andthatwe do
whatwe can to provide immediatefixes.We are currentlyfocusingourenergyonstudentaccessissues

usedsuchas ProctorU, make sure itis veryclearto company/proctorsthatstudentswith
accommodationsmayneedexternalsoftware- suchasmagnification,texttospeechsoftware,
permissiontouse grammar/spell checkincaseswhere thatoccurs.
Be aware for bothsynchronouslearningandtest-takingthatstudentswithsomemental healthissues,
such as severe anxiety,significantADHDsymptoms,orthose onthe autismspectrummayhave varying
levelsof eye contact- maylookaroundthe roomor fidget,readthe testoutloudto themselves,pace
the room, spininthe chair,etc. These behaviors,whileperhapsconsideredunusual,wouldnotviolate

Normally,we donotprovide the accommodationsfornotetakingforonlineclasses.However,since our
studentsare movingtoonline instructionwithouthavingan optionforface to face,there will be some
challengesrelatedtothe needfornote taking.Pleaseconsider:
If some online lecturesare recorded,make sure theycanbe pausedandstoppedfornotetaking.The
textsmayneedto be providedtothe student.
Rememberthatstudentswiththe AskQuestionsandClarificationNeededaccommodationswill require
instructorsto respondtostudentsviaemail orphone intimelymanner,hopefullywithin24hoursduring
