But, the agricultural productivity in India has been at near stagnant levels over the last decade. Agricultural production in India currently stands at around 220 mn tons which just about meets the domestic requirements. This requirement is projected to increase to a level of 340 mn tons by 2011, which is nearly 50% higher over the present situation. This would mean that productivity needs to dramatically improve in the next 5 years for India to avoid potential food security issues.
