4. Kuba cloth
“Kuba cloth” or “Kasai velvet” is a raffia cloth
embroidered with a combination of textured
stitches and a velour-like pile made by the the
Bakuba people.
Men weave the base fabric; women embroider the
designs freehand, using the base fabric’s threads
as a guide in the same way Europeans worked
counted cross-stitch and drawn-thread motifs
on clothing and household linens.
Diaspora-era Kongo and early Bushoong cloths
evidence a passion for balance, organization
and order. They are monochromatic or use
color sparingly;
contrast is achieved
through texture,
mostly embroidery
rather than
plush.

6. Join us in giving a ‘hand up, not a handout’ to make a lasting im-
pact in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In collaboration with the Lotumbe grassroots NGO, Fondation Lucie Otaen-
ga (FLO), and the highly respected Université Protestante au Congo (UPC)
in the capitol of Kinshasa (www.upCongo.org), HandUp Congo identifies
resources and facilitates connections that are keys to building the chaotic
nation of DRC.
We invite you to join us by “investing” in Congolese women and girls,
a movement aimed at unlocking their power as economic catalysts!
Help HandUp Congo build opportunities for women and girls with
Congolese project partners we know personally, and who can give you
timely, accountable reports. Our directors visit Congo regularly,
and can provide you with personalized details on the impact your
contribution is making.
Be a part of this story of transformation.
It is change that is already taking place, and change that can accelerate if
you’ll just open your heart and join in.
Choose from our GIFT CATALOG of income generating ideas to
support and empower Congolese women.
All contributions will be entirely channelled to Hand Up Congo for the respective projects.
