<<THE ALEBRIJES>>
“Alebrijes” are bright imaginary creatures made up of features from deterrents
animal, and you may have seen them in the movie “coco”. They were born out of the
Mexican artist Pedro Linares 1906-1992,
fever dream during an extended, illness.
He named them “alebrijes” because that´s the
work these creatures were screaming in his
dream. The meaning of “alebrijes” to comes of
the verb “decorate or adorn”.
Pedro Linares was a “Cartonero” that live in Mexico City who makes sculptures, out
of cardboard. After is dream, be began selling cardboards “alebrijes”, and he found
they sold better that his other sculptures, but he had to change the “alebrijes” a bit
in order to sell them. First there were too ugly and people didn´t want to buy them.
So, he made them more colorful.
“Alebrijes” at also took off in Oaxaca, where artist Manuel Jimenez (1919-2005)
adapted Linares´s “alebrijes” to wood carving, whereas others Oaxaca artists use a
sot cedar called a copal.
Manuel Jimenez used a variety of knives tor this work, with machetes to small
Kitchen knives to crate his masterpiece.
Moreover, He started by carving masks and small wood miniatures when he was
young and later, he began carving “alebrijes”.
Then his town San Antonio Arrazola gained international recognition.
HOW TO MAKE AN ALEBRIJES?
Materials
 Paste (Engrudo of flour)
 Wire
 News paper
 Acrylic paintings (different colors)
Step One:
First Mold the wire to figure that you like, for forming
a base for the “alebrije”
Step Two:
Then cut strip of newspaper of different sizes.
Step Three:
Later star giving the strips of paper on the
wire base, layer. Until the base becomes
hard as a “Piñata”, let dry for enough time
Step Four
Finish Decorate with the acrylic pain tings,
let your imagination flow. For create colorful
designs.
Sincerely I have never done an “alebrije”, but
the “alebrijes” are beautiful art expression
that represent the creativity. The “alegrijes”
are part of the extensive Mexican cultural
variety.
