Alebrijes are colorful souvenirs from Mexico that were created based on a dream of Pedro Linares. When Linares was sick with a high fever, he dreamed of fantastical creatures like a donkey with butterfly wings. After recovering, he shaped the creatures he dreamed of out of paper and papier-mâché. Linares' alebrijes became instantly popular and he spent the rest of his life crafting more imaginary creatures, establishing the art form. His family continues making alebrijes today, keeping his tradition alive.
