I protagonisti indiscussi del Carnevale sono i costumi : abbiamo creato uno slideshow con i 10 migliori costumi tradizionali da tutto il mondo, includendo i più bizzarri e meno conosciuti. Tra gli altri: Croazia, Svizzera, Spagna, Belgio, Italia e Repubblica Dominicana. Dietro ad ognuno dei costumi e delle maschere sfoggiate c'è una storia e una tradizione peculiare per ogni paese.
2. La parola ha origini cattoliche Nella tradizione Cattolica, ai Santi viene dedicato un giorno particolare del calendario
3. Il 1°novembre è il giorno nel quale vengono festeggiati tutti i Santi . Il giorno dedicato ad "Ogni Santi" ( in inglese All Saints’Day ) aveva una denominazione antica: All Hallows’Day
4. Presso i popoli antichi la celebrazione di "Ogni Santi" iniziava al tramonto del 31 ottobre. Era chiamata "All Hallows’ Eve" (Eve significa vigilia), che venne abbreviato in Hallows’Even, poi in Halloween .
5. La celebrazione di Halloween tuttavia ha origini pagane molto più antiche e nasce dalla civiltà Celtica .
6. I Celti credevano che alla vigilia di ogni nuovo anno (31 Ottobre) Samhain , Signore della Morte, Principe delle Tenebre, chiamasse a sé tutti gli SPIRITI DEI MORTI permettendo al mondo degli spiriti di unirsi al mondo dei viventi.
7. I Celti credevano anche che i morti potessero abitare con il Popolo delle Fate nelle collinette scozzesi ed irlandesi.
8. Una leggenda riferisce che tutte le persone morte l’anno precedente tornassero sulla terra la notte del 31 ottobre, in cerca di nuovi corpi da possedere per l’anno dopo
9. Così nei villaggi veniva spento ogni focolare per evitare che gli spiriti maligni venissero ad abitarvi.
10. L'usanza moderna di travestirsi nel giorno di Halloween, nasce dalla tradizione che i Celti avevano, di festeggiare mascherandosi con le pelli degli animali uccisi per esorcizzare e spaventare gli spiriti .
11. Vestiti con queste maschere grottesche ritornavano al villaggio illuminando il loro cammino con lanterne costituite da cipolle intagliate al cui interno erano poste le braci del Fuoco Sacro.
14. Nella tradizione celtica le Fate erano spesso considerate nemiche e pericolose dagli uomini. Le leggende narrano che nella notte di Samihain le Fate sono solite fare " SCHERZETTI " agli umani, portandoli a perdersi nelle "colline delle Fate“ dove rimanevano intrappolati per sempre .
15. I Celti quindi, per guadagnarsi il favore delle Fate, erano soliti offrire loro del cibo o latte che veniva lasciato sui gradini delle loro case.
16. E' proprio da queste leggende che ha origine il famoso gioco del “ Scherzetto o dolcetto” nella quale i bambini travestiti con maschere e costumi "mostruosi e terrificanti" vanno di casa in casa, chiedendo dolcetti o qualche moneta.
17. Se non ricevono niente, possono giocare un brutto scherzo ai proprietari di quella casa, come svuotare la pattumiera nel giardino o attaccare lattine vuote al tubo di scappamento dell’auto.
18. Visto che la Chiesa cattolica non riusciva a togliere questi antichi culti pagani, escogitò un tentativo per far perdere il profondo significato di questi riti.
19. Nell’ 835 Papa Gregorio spostò la festa di Tutti i Santi dal 13 Maggio al 1° Novembre , pensando così di dare un nuovo significato ai culti pagani.
20. Ma il culto di Samhain rimase e per questo motivo la Chiesa aggiunse , nel X° secolo, una nuova festa: il 2 Novembre il Giorno dei Morti in memoria delle anime degli scomparsi che venivano festeggiati dai loro cari, che mascherandosi da santi, angeli e diavoli accendevano dei falò.
21. Il simbolo di Halloween è la Zucca intagliata , con all'interno una candela che in America viene chiamata JackO'Lantern.
22. Una leggenda irlandese narra di Stingy Jack, noto scommettitore e bevitore , che una sera di Halloween invitò il Diavolo a bere insieme a lui.
23. Usciti insieme dalla sua casa, Jack scommise con Satana che non sarebbe riuscito ad arrampicarsi su un albero. Una volta che il Diavolo salì sull'albero, Jack incise una croce nella corteccia.
24. Il Demonio non potendo più discendere a causa del simbolo sacro, dovette accettare il patto propostogli da Jack: se il Diavolo avesse promesso di non tentarlo più , allora avrebbe tolto la croce dall'albero. Il Diavolo accettò.
25. Tuttavia quando Jack morì, non potè entrare in Paradiso a cause dei suoi vizi, ed anche il Diavolo gli negò l'accesso all'Inferno a causa dell’imbroglio che gli aveva giocato. Il Diavolo però consegnò a Jack un tizzone ardente per illuminare il suo cammino nell'oscurità.
26. Per farlo durare più a lungo, Jack mise il tizzone in una cipolla svuotata . La leggenda dice che ogni notte di Halloween, Jack vaghi ancora nelle tenebre con la sua brace ardente.
