Halloween is celebrated on October 31 in many countries. The origin of Halloween lies
in the traditions of the Celtic people. The tradition is made especially in the United
States, Canada, Ireland and UK.

Traditions

There are many parties, and people disguise themselves as witches, ghosts, Dracula,
Frankenstein and more.

“Trick or Treat”

There is a tradition called “Trick or Treat” , children and adolescents disguise
themselves and go knocking on doors of friends and neighbors, and say “Trick or
Treat”. These give them sweets or fruit (“treat”), if not, the kids play a prank (“trick”).

Jack O’lantern

A jack o’lantern is typically a carved pumpkin.
Many houses have, outside the home, lanterns made from pumpkins.

Witches

Witches have a very important role in Halloween. No wonder it is known as “Dia das
bruxas” in Portugal. According to various legends, witches got together twice a year,
during the change of seasons: on April 30 and October 31. Arriving on broomsticks,
witches attended a celebration chaired by Devil. They threw curses and spells on
anyone.
