The author set out to walk the entire length of Japan barefoot along with his wife over 3200 km. They camped for most of the trip, staying in tents, cabins, and one unusual night in a toilet. His wife was in charge of packing for their journey which took them along coastal roads and involved taking ferries between islands. They encountered friendly people along the way including other pilgrims and took breaks from walking to rest at ryokans and enjoy local foods like okonomiyake.
