What every successful open source project needs
In the last few years open source has transformed the software industry. From Android to Wikipedia, open source is everywhere, but how does one succeed in it? While open source projects come in all shapes and sizes and all forms of governance, no matter what kind of project you’re a part of, there are a set of fundamentals that lead to success. I’d like to share some of the lessons I’ve learned from running two of the largest commercial open source projects, Docker and MongoDB, as well as some very successful community projects.

How Open Source Helps to Bring Back Product Obsession
When a company relies heavily on open source, it is a common practice to develop strategies and long term goals to manage the relationship between the company’s products and the open source ecosystem. We created the Open Source Program Office to:
- Make sure the important open source projects for Sauce are in a healthy state
- Motivate all Sauce Labs employees to consume and contribute to OSS in a simple, secure and healthy way
- Facilitate communication between product and the open source ecosystem
- Bring developers closer to the community to enable innovation and product obsession
- Shape and build important standards for Sauce Labs, such as WebDriver, in collaboration with other open source groups
This talk will show how we are doing all this in small steps, planning for the long run and involving all teams to increase the sense of belonging of OSS. And more importantly, it will show why having an open source strategy matters, and how can this benefit everyone in the long term.

Technical Mentoring, What works and not
Technical practices like refactoring and TDD (Test-Driven Development) have become mainstream in software development. However, software developers I met in many companies are either oblivious or have a different interpretation. My interest is to help developers adopt technical practices and being a mentor has played a big part. Through the years I've tried many ways to maximise the effectiveness of mentee's learning and also brings many challenges and discoveries. Releasing an open source project while maintaining a shipping product is hard! Different behaviors, attitudes and actions can help or hinder your cause; and they are not always obvious.
The Blueflood distributed metrics engine was released as open source software by Rackspace in August 2012. In the succeeding months the team had to strike a manageable balance between the challenges of growing a community, being good open source stewards, and maintaining a shipping product for Rackspace. Find out what worked, what did not work, and the lessons that can be applied as you endeavor to take your project out into the open.
In this presentation you will learn about strategies for releasing open source products, pitfalls to avoid, and the potential benefits of moving more of your development out in the open.
We have also made a few realizations about the community growing up around metrics. It is still young, and there are problems that come with that youth. I'll talk about some things we can do to make a better software ecosystem.

It will cover various real world relevant aspects of open source communites and projects, as well as put to rest various bits of FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) that vendors may throw around. It'll cover best practices for interaction and contributing to open source projects and their communities (specific to archival, and also a more general foundation) on issue trackers, mailing lists, etc., with confidence, so that everyone can benefit.

All of us, as part of the technical sphere, have sometime or the other heard about the term 'open-source'. Even if we haven't, we have been using since the first time we learned an algorithm or downloaded a software for free from the internet. But for most of you, this term may still be shrouded in mystery. So DSC IIT Goa and InfoSec IIT Goa are here for the rescue.
In this introductory event, we will celebrate the existence of this ever-expanding and most welcoming open-source community. A brief overview of the topics we'll cover is as below:

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
