Editor's Notes

  • #2 Hi Thank you so much for coming today. I am Kate, So today I was asked to tell how my adventures in the world of programming started . My topic is one very important mindset shared by every developer I have met. I feel my presentation will in particular get the attention of those who have no idea how to get started. Indeed, I hope that by sharing my experience, I can encourage more women who have interest but no background in the Tech field to take action.
  • #3 Please allow me to tell you a little bit about my background. After a few years spent in traditional business, the idea of learning coding popped up in my mind as I realized that instead of spending years looking for apps that would only partially satisfy my requirements, I could actually try to create them on my own! Moreover, from my past experiences, I knew that programming skills would make me a valuable asset to a lot of companies regardless of the field they are operating in. Therefore, after having attended a few meetups such as Tokyo iOS meetup, Learn Swift Tokyo, and of course Women Who Code, it felt like the right time to explore a new and promising field. Through online courses such as Udemy, Progate, and RayWendelich, I started learning Swift in my free time, and liked it so much that it became obvious that this had to be my next career move. I happily quit my job, and joined TECH EXPERT, a programming school in Shibuya. Why Swift, by the way? As a Mac lover and an iPhone user, I simply followed my instinct pause(and what Siri recommended).
  • #4 I chose TECH::EXPERT because I thought that iPhone app development would limit my career choices. So I chose the school with a curriculum covering basic software development from the front-end to the back-end skills. The front-end skills are the ones you need to create what users see, for example HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, which I learned at my school. The back-end skills are the ones you need to set up the internal logics of Websites. In my case Ruby, Ruby on rails. Moreover, I learned how to deploy source code on Heroku and AWS. Software Deployment is the process of deploying the software build on the target server(s) which includes installing, updating, un-installing, distributing software applications where applicable. The most valuable skill I could get at TECH::EXPERT was how to do scrum development on Github. I developed an Amazon-like website, collaborating with 3 classmates. Right after I finished my curriculum, I got my job working as a Java Developer at Yamato, ltd. which is an Adobe Solution Partner. Currently, I customize Adobe Experiment Manager based on client’s requirements by using Java. I am having two projects , 50% Doing Project management by managing 7 Vietnamese developers, and 50% coding by myself.
  • #5 So it’s been a year since I first got involved in the Tech field and I found there is one common mindset all developer share. Which is hacking mind, in other words, redefining impossibility. When hackers want to attain a goal that seems inaccessible, they seek new paths that no one imagined would exist. My hacker mind allowed me to move from a masters in British Literature to a position of Java Developer at a Software development company.
  • #6 I am not special. Unlike many other fields, software development offers wide arrays of teaching methods. See? Today’s venue Code Chrysalis, silicon Barry style coding camp. Udemy, online course platform you can find whatever technical courses of wide range of levels. There are just so many options you can try out - and this slide is far from exhaustive! Personally, I chose to go to TECH::EXPERT because I wanted full-time intensive lessons and wanted to gain experience in scrum development. Please ask yourself what is your favorite way of learning, and try out as much as you can. Then you will find what to put in each of these question mark boxes, which represent your path to your next career as a software developer. I want to encourage everyone who is interested in joining the programming field. I want them to decide what they want to do, and not let their career decide on their behalf, according to their academic and professional history. So please be creative, get the hacker mind, and you will realize your potential.
  • #7 If you have any question about course and curriculum of TECH::EXPERT or what I am doing now , Java or Adobe Experience Manager, feel free to ask me during networking session and feedback is always welcome! Thank you so much for coming tonight and please enjoy as much as you can! Thank you so much for your listening!
