As one of the integral parts of the What If Technique™, Mona Patel, Founder/CEO of Motivate Design, will ask you to reflect on and question your behaviors and attitudes when it comes to ideating and thinking in a creative space. Do you hesitate to strive for the impossible? Is that hesitation rooted in fact or belief? Are you just creating excuses?
Mona will walk you through the six Excuse Personas that are preventing you from getting what you really want in not only your personal life but in business and beyond. She will cover how we all have personality barriers and that each can be overcome through self-reflection and a commitment to action. Expect to leave the session with a sense of self-realization that will motivate you to embrace the white space and start training your creativity muscle.
The document discusses several topics at the intersection of social issues in America including socioeconomic class, racism, gender, environmentalism, affirmative action, and social media. It questions whether factors like class, wealth, gender, and race determine outcomes in areas like poverty, domestic violence, pollution, and career attainment or if individual effort and social progress have allowed more people to overcome obstacles. The document suggests some social problems may have become more subtle and asks if continued social and technological changes could further impact privacy, perspectives, and human behavior.

This document poses a series of sociological questions about topics such as the relationship between socioeconomic class and racism, gender differences in poverty, the impact of social class on environmental pollution, the role of affirmative action in integrating minorities, whether social circumstances determine life outcomes, and the influence of media and technology on privacy and human behavior. Many of the questions explore whether social factors shape important issues like racism, poverty, and environmental degradation, or determine opportunities and life trajectories. Others consider whether integration and social progress have truly been achieved or taken on more subtle forms.
The document describes the TRANSIT program at the University of York, which aims to lower barriers to interdisciplinary research. The program will promote collaboration through seminars, visiting researchers, and funding for feasibility studies. It will also provide training in structured thinking techniques and establish a virtual platform to connect researchers across disciplines and advertise activities. The goal is to develop an interdisciplinary research community and foster more transdisciplinary approaches.
Don’t get Bootslapped: How to Avoid Common Pitfalls with CSS FrameworksWebVisions
In the good ‘ol days, as a front end developer, we were handed a design and we would build our CSS layout and structure from scratch. Ah, how good it felt to reinvent the wheel every time! </sarcasm>
Enter the age of CSS frameworks. We started with grid systems such as 960 and Blueprint, which introduced developers to the column & grid format. Now, we have added full layout and UI into frameworks such as Foundation and Bootstrap; the options are endless. While frameworks are a powerful tool for developers, they are not an end-all-be-all guarantee of high-quality implementation. On the other hand, you may think frameworks are bloated, limiting, and difficult to extend; these too, are common misconceptions. Either way, without proper use and strategy, a CSS framework could result in non-scalable websites or applications, and extreme frustrations for the developer.
Stephanie Sansoucie, "Future of Omnichannel Immersion"WebVisions
Meaningful experience innovation can be found at the point where emerging technology, customer needs and business strategy converge. Big box retailers are in a precarious state today, evolve or die, resulting in substantial innovation across the domain. This evolution moves well beyond the retail domain, however, and will likely impact any organization that plays across physical and digital touchpoints.
In the future, emerging technology will infuse data into the fabric of our world resulting in immersive, contextually relevant experiences. To generate these immersive experiences, we will need to uncover customer needs beyond those high-level key moments of truth across the journey. We need to expose the micro-moments that matter. Just as organizations invest in experience evolution, so too must they evolve their business model based on learnings.
The future omnichannel organization is a nimble, learning organization driven by the changing needs of their customer. User experience professionals stand at the forefront of effective evolution. We are moving beyond the traditional interface. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of our work, we have the skills to bridge the gap between emerging technology and strategy to create new patterns of interaction. We must evolve our discipline to be ready for the future of omnichannel immersion.

Location Based Marketing
In the past few years, there has been significant worldwide growth in the number of people using location-based services and corresponding marketer investment in geo targeted advertising and media.
We expect this trend to increase exponentially as the ability to deliver on the promise of highly relevant, real-time personal connections between brands, people and communities becomes further realized.
In this POV, we explore the technology, media and strategy fueling the opportunities of location-based marketing.
Mark Wyner, "A New Dawn of the Human Experience"WebVisions
In what is being called the “third era of computing,” cognitive computing is revolutionizing the relationship between humans and computers. Internet of Things is only the beginning. Artificial Intelligence is finally sprouting out of science fiction and blossoming into palpable technology. Cognitive systems are able to learn independently, build upon pre-programmed knowledge, understand natural language, and interact with human beings with reasoning and logic.
In this session Mark will explore how, through the anthropomorphizing of machines, we are creating an environment of fabricated empathy that will change the human experience, and how we are asking machines to make ethical decisions that they’re grossly unprepared to do. He will also discuss why Artificial Intelligence won’t create an apocalypse of robots who take over the world. Maybe.
Mark's keynote was given at WebVisions Portland on Fri., May 20, 2016.

What happens when the digital tools and platforms we make and use for communication and entertainment are hijacked for terrorism, violence against the vulnerable and nefarious transactions? What role do designers and developers play? Are we complicit as creators of these technologies and products? Should we police them or fight back? As Portfolio Lead for Northern Lab, Northern Trust's internal innovation startup focused on client and partner experience, Antonio will share a mix of provocative scenarios torn from today's headlines and compelling stories where activism and technology facilitated peace—and war.
As a call-to-action for designers and developers to engage in projects capable of transformational change, he'll explore the question: How might technology foster new experiences to better accelerate social activism and make the world a smarter, safer place?
