Succession “Losers”: What Happens to Executives Passed Over for the CEO Job?
By David F. Larcker, Stephen A. Miles, and Brian Tayan
Stanford Closer Look Series
Overview:
Shareholders pay considerable attention to the choice of executive selected as the new CEO whenever a change in leadership takes place. However, without an inside look at the leading candidates to assume the CEO role, it is difficult for shareholders to tell whether the board has made the correct choice. In this Closer Look, we examine CEO succession events among the largest 100 companies over a ten-year period to determine what happens to the executives who were not selected (i.e., the “succession losers”) and how they perform relative to those who were selected (the “succession winners”).
We ask:
• Are the executives selected for the CEO role really better than those passed over?
• What are the implications for understanding the labor market for executive talent?
• Are differences in performance due to operating conditions or quality of available talent?
• Are boards better at identifying CEO talent than other research generally suggests?

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

8. Hajdúszoboszló
• Az alföldi város ismert fürdőhelye egy
véletlennek köszönheti felfedezését.
• 1925. október 25-én Hajdúszoboszlón, Pávai
Vajna Ferenc geológus vezette szénhidrogén
kutatások közben földgáz mellett 73 C°-os víz
is a felszínre tört.
9. Hajdúszoboszló
• A különleges hővíz felkeltette a kutatók
figyelmét, s az 1100 méterről fakadó forrás
helyén kisvártatva megépült a napjainkban is
egész évben látogatható gyógyfürdő.
• Dr. Bodnár János, a Debreceni
Orvostudományi Egyetem Orvos Vegytani
Intézetének igazgatója így írt a szoboszlói
vízről 1925-ben:
10. Hajdúszoboszló
• "Analysisünk szerint a hajdúszoboszlói
mélyfúrásból eredő víz alkalikus-jódos-brómos-
konyha-sós hévíznek minősítendő.
• Egybevetve a chémiai analysis adatait a víz igen
magas hőmérsékletével kimondható, hogy a maga
nemében egyedülállónak tekinthető, hozzá
hasonló összetételű és hőmérsékletű víz - a
rendelkezésünkre álló analysisek alapján - nem
ismeretes."
11. Hajdúszoboszló
• Hajdúszoboszló városa megismerve a tudósok
elemzéseit elhatározta, hogy fürdőt épít.
• Másfél év múlva, 1927. július 26-án megnyílt
a fövenyfürdő
14. Sárvár
• Sárvári Gyógyfürdő medencéi kétféle, 1200
méteres mélységből feltörő és 43 Celsius fokos
forrásból táplálkoznak.
• A fürdő unikuma az a 83 fokos, 2000 méter
mélyről táplálkozó és magas sótartalmú
gyógyvíz, melyből lepárlással állítják elő a
híres Sárvári Termálkristályt.
15. Sárvár
• Sárvár geológiai adottságai folytán már a
hatvanas évek elején szénhidrogén
kutatófúrásokat végzetek.
• Sárvár környékén 1200 méteres mélységből
43°C-os (alkáli- hidrogénkarbonátos)
• 2000 méterről magas sótartalmú 83°C-os
gyógyvíz tör fel (literenként 43mgNaCl)
• Az Európai Királyi Fürdők Szövetségének
tagja 2004 óta
18. Egerszalók
• Az Európában is egyedülálló Egerszalóki
hőforrás és mésztufa domb alatt feltörő
kalcium-hidrogénkarbonátos hévíz alkotta só
domb
A fenyőfák alatt meghúzódó forrás igazán
csodálatos látványt nyújt.
• Az Egerszalóki hőforrás helyi
mikroklímájával sajátos éghajlatot alakít
ki.
• A két kutat 18-20 ezer évesnek azonosították a
balneológusok. A kutakból kiömlő víz a lejtőn
lefolyva a Laskó - patakba kerül.

22. Hévízi Gyógytó
• A hazánk kincsének számító Hévízi Gyógytó
története felső triász időszakára nyúlik vissza
• Ásványi anyagokban gazdag vize, melyet 38
méteres mélységből egy - korai geológiai
periódusban keletkezett- termálforrás táplál
• 410 literes másodpercenkénti vízhozamnak
köszönhetően három és fél nap alatt teljesen
kicserélődik.
23. Hévízi Gyógytó
• Nem csupán vize egyedülálló összetételű a
maga nemében, hanem az alját borító iszap is,
amely szintén gyógyhatású.
• A gyógytó hőmérséklete nyáron eléri a 38 C°-
ot, azonban télen sem csökken 22 C° alá.
• A hévízi gyógytó összetevőitől, hatásától
egyedi.
24. Hévízi Gyógytó
• Három földtörténeti kor találkozik e tónál és
együttesen adják mindazt, ami a leginkább
hasznosítható:
• a jégkorszaki rétlápban tör fel az a pannon
mészkőben tárolt termál karsztvíz, amelynek
utánpótlása a geológiai középkor triász –
dolomitjából jön.
25. Hévízi Gyógytó
• A dolomit adja a gyulladásgátló kalciumot,és
magnéziumot.
• A mészkőből származik az értágító szénsav és
a karbonáttól lesz bársonyos a bőr
• A veszélytelen mennyiségben jelenlevő, de
mégis hatásos nemesgázok a mellékvesét több
gyulladásgátló hormon képzésére-, a
pajzsmirigyet pedig több csontépítő hormon
termelésére késztetik.
26. Hévízi Gyógytó
• A termálvíz és a tó medrét borító több méter
vastag tőzeg egymásra hatásával alakul ki az
az iszap, mely a gyógyvíz minden kémiai
anyagát koncentrálja,megsokszorozza
• Az így kialakult iszap nagy mennyiségben
tartalmaz huminsavat,mely külső belső
használatra egyaránt alkalmas
