Guy Fawkes Day, also known as Bonfire Night, commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Guy Fawkes and other Catholic conspirators planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I, as Catholics did not want a Protestant king ruling England. The plot was uncovered and the conspirators were executed. Since then, bonfires and fireworks on November 5th celebrate the king's survival and Catholic persecution increased as they lost rights until the 19th century. Children traditionally made "guys" to burn in the fires and begged for money to buy fireworks.
