BC3 formed a joint venture with Chicago based architecture firm, 2 Point Perspective (2PP), for the design of a two story medical office building in Coconut Creek, FL. 2PP’s practice combines interior design and architecture and focuses on sustainable solutions. For this project they will bring their expertise in both practice areas and serve as the Design Architect. BC3, an interdisciplinary design firm with trained professionals in Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Design; will serve as the Architect of Record and the project’s Landscape Designer. BC3 Principal, Jason Tapia, AIA; will contribute local technical expertise while Landscape Designer, Daniela Romero, will lead the team’s landscape design efforts. DISCOVERY + CONTINUITY LANDSCAPE DESIGN CONCEPT The “Discovery” component of the idea will seek to introduce Florida native plants in the design which may be new to the neighborhood. Plants such as: Pinus elliotti, and Serenoa repens. Additionally the design team wanted to connect with the Village of Coconut Creek’s status as the “butterfly capital of the world” by introducing pollinizers, plants that attract pollinators such as butterflies. The areas where these plants are clustered are referred to in the design as “butterfly stations” and will have specialty signage identifying the plant and the species of butterfly it attracts. The “Continuity” aspects of the idea center around the existing Slash pine where Daniela focused on strengthening the east portion of the site’s relationship with the Pine Rockland preserve. SUSTAINABLE IDEAS - LANDSCAPE The design team selected all Florida native or Florida friendly plants in order to reduce water consumption for irrigation. In areas adjacent to the building and walkways drip irrigation was used to eliminate overspray and reduce evapotranspiration. PUBLIC ART The Village of Coconut Creek requires project’s of a certain size to incorporate public art into the building or on site. BC3 proposed to 2PP that an artist installation be commissioned which would incorporate art with the butterfly stations to highlight that aspect of our design. BC3 is in the process of authoring the Request for Proposal to invite artists to submit their qualifications.
