Mr. Gummoe grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania and attended school nearby. During World War II, he was sent to study engineering but was later deployed with the 89th infantry division and General Patton's third army, driving a jeep. He spent a year after the war occupying Austria before being discharged. After the war, he finished his engineering degree and worked with tractors until injuring his knee, which now prevents him from bowling, a hobby he enjoyed. Though he faced difficult experiences in the war, Mr. Gummoe would serve again and still finds compassion for others today.
