The Cristero War was a conflict that occurred in central Mexico between 1926 and 1929. It started as a response against the anti-clerical laws and policies of the Mexican government that suppressed the Catholic Church. Government troops fought against Catholic rebels known as Cristeros in a bloody civil war that resulted in over 90,000 deaths before a peaceful resolution was reached.
