Lower respiratory infections, such as pneumonia, are the most common infectious disease globally and a leading cause of death, followed by diarrhea and HIV/AIDS. In 2011, infectious diseases were the second highest cause of global deaths according to the World Health Organization. In 2008, nearly half of the 8.8 million children that died before their fifth birthday occurred in Africa, with pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, and measles responsible for 44% of deaths among children under five years old.
