2. What is a Group Discussion?
• Group discussions --- Group communication.
• It is a creative and dynamic activity.
• It stimulates reflective thinking among the members.
• Definition: It is an activity in which a small number of persons meet
face to face and exchange and share ideas freely or attempt to reach
a decision on a common issue.
4. Group Discussion: Organized Vs. Unorganized
Organized and goal oriented
• Specifically limited number of
participants
• It is time bound
• It is held in a controlled way
• Arguments are prevented
Unorganized
• No such limit
• No time limit
• It chaotically goes on
• Discussion often transforms to
an argument

• Initiative
• Eye contact
• Team player
• Mutual respect
• Time management
• Assertive communication
• Good listening

• Avoid interrupting others bluntly
• Avoid dominance during the discussion
• Dress professionally
• Analytical skills
• Be sensible (what to speak and what not to…)

• Take initiative to achieve the
group goal:

10. Eye Contact
• Ensure the eye contact
• But be empathetic
• Ensure that you are taking care

• Respect the ideas of other
members while you are
explaining your ideas
• Never lose your temper
• Ensure cordial discussion

• Be mindful of time while you
take your turn
• Deliver your points, taking two,
three turns or as per need
• One-minute talk is preferred
during your every turn or as per
the situation.

• Assertive Vs. Aggressive
• Never be aggressive
• Never be passive
• But be assertive (content,
eloquence empathy, honesty …)

• Don’t interrupt others for no reason
• If necessary, do it politely by using the polite expressions

• Sorry to interrupt you
17. Avoid dominance during the discussion
• Be active but never be dominative
• Speak and let others speak
• Help out your co-participants with your prompts when needed
• Remember that the democratic way of participation is progressive.
19. Analytical Skills
• Understanding the problem/topic
• Recollecting info from background knowledge base
• Sensible interpretation of the data in memory
• Be analytical for attaining the group goal
• Meta-Cognition is needed while delivering points
