students personality
ā€¢ Group Discussion is a process where exchange of
ideas and opinions take place
ā€¢ Atopic is discussed by a group
How is it conducted?

ā€¢ Atypical GD comprises of a small group of candidates
i.e. 5 to 10 students
ā€¢ Students sit in a circular or C shape arrangement
ā€¢ Each group is then given a topic for discussion
ā€¢ Students are given a paper and pen &2 minutes to think
before they start discussing
ā€¢ AGD should last not more than 15-20 minutes

ā€¢ Speak - Try and get a chance to speak. If you can't get a chance to
speak make your chance.
ā€¢ Initiate- Take the initiative to begin the discussion, if possible.
ā€¢ Structure - Structure arguments logically - justify your stand.
ā€¢ Summarize- Summarize the discussion effectively
ā€¢ Involve- Take active part throughout the GD.
ā€¢ Articulate- Work continuously towards articulating your ideas into
meaningful sentences to make the best impact. Beclear in your
speech.
ā€¢ Listen- Be an attentive listener.
ā€¢ Quality, not quantity matters- it's not ā€˜how much' you say, but
ā€˜what' you say that's important.

1. Do not criticize on religion
2. Do not get personal with anyone
3. Never ever try to bluff
4. Do not be shy /nervous / keep yourself isolated from G.D
5. Interrupt another participant before his argument is over
6. Do not Change opinions
7. Donā€™t make fun of any participant even if his arguments
are funny
8. Do not Get irritated

Donā€™ts
ā€¢ Donā€™t lose your temper. Adiscussion is not an
argument.
ā€¢ Donā€™t shout. Use a moderate tone and medium pitch.
ā€¢ Donā€™t use too many gestures when you speak.
Gestures like finger pointing and table thumping
can appear aggressive.
ā€¢ Donā€™t dominate the discussion. Confident speakers
should allow quieter students a chance to contribute.
ā€¢ Donā€™t interrupt. Wait for a speaker to finish what
they are saying before you speak.

ā€¢ Donā€™t worry about making some grammatical
mistakes, for your interest the matter you put across
are important

Donā€™ts
1) Keepeyecontact whilespeaking:
Do not look at the evaluators only. Keep eye contact with every team
member while speaking.
2) InitiatetheGD:
Initiating the GD is a big plus. But keep in mind ā€“ Initiate the group
discussion only when you understood the GD topic clearly and have
some topic knowledge. Speaking without proper subject knowledge
is bad impression.
3) Allow otherstospeak:
Do not interrupt anyone in-between while speaking. Even if you
donā€™t agree with his/her thoughts do not snatch their chance to
speak. Instead make some notes and clear the points when itā€™s your
turn.

4) Speakclearly:
Speak politely and clearly. Use simple and understandable words
while speaking. Donā€™t be too aggressive if you are disagreeing with
someone. Express your feelings calmly and politely.
5)Makesuretobring thediscussion on track:
If by any means group is distracting from the topic or goal then
simply take initiative to bring the discussion on the track. Make all
group members aware that you all need to come to some conclusion
at the end of the discussion. So stick to the topic.
6) Positiveattitude:
Be confident. Do not try to dominate anyone. Keep positive body
language. Show interest in discussion.

7)Speaksensibly:
Do not speak just to increase your speaking time. Donā€™t worry even if you
speak less. Your thoughts should be sensible and relevant instead of
irrelevant speech.
8 )Listencarefully toothers:
Speak less and listen more! Pay attention while others are speaking. This
will make coherent discussion and you will get involved in the group
positively. You will surely make people agree with you.
9)Noneedtogointomuch details:
You have limited time so be precise and convey your thoughts in short
and simple language.

ā€¢ Avoid stating only your viewpoint.
ā€¢ Avoid dwelling only on one aspect of the GD.
ā€¢ Keep it brief and concise.
ā€¢ It must incorporate all the important points that
came out during the GD.
ā€¢ If the examiner asks you to summaries a GD, it
means the GD has come to an end.
ā€¢ Do not add anything once the GD has been
summarized.

Speaking without proper subject knowledge is bad impression. 3) Allow otherstospeak: Do not interrupt anyone in-between while speaking.
