Propulsion and Control(PPC)
A System which causes the movement of vehicle from one point to another.
3 Types of Propulsion:
1.High Power Propulsion (HPP)
2.Medium Power Propulsion (MPP)
3.Low Power Propulsion (LPP)

Parts of A.C Electrical Locomotive

Propulsion & Control(PPC)
 Pantograph- Maintains Link between catenary and power circuit of locomotive.
 Circuit Breaker- Protects the power circuit in kind of any fault.
 Transformer- Receives the high voltage from catenary and step down to desired level.
 Rectifier- Converts the low voltage A.C supply to D.C supply.
 Main Inverter- Converts the D.C power to 3-Phase A.C Power to drive 3-phase A.C
supply.
 Auxiliary Inverter- Supplies the power to another parts of locomotives like fans ,
compressors, blowers.
 Compressors- Maintains the cooling/heating requirement in locomotive.
 Battery- Supplies the necessary starting current and also power up the essential circuits
such as emergency lighting.
 D.C Link- Connects the rectifier and Inverter circuits.

How Traction System Works:
Single Phase to 3-Phase System

Single Phase to D.C Converter

Regenerative Braking:
 Regenerative braking is a concept to utilize the heating energy.
 Whenever brakes are applied all the heat energy generated by friction is
converted into the electricity by brake blending register and fed back into
catenary by the necessary mechanism.
 Synchronous rectifier is used between AC Catenary and the Locomotives
internal DC Bus.
 Regenerative Braking is much easier when the catenary supply is DC because
DC Traction Motors automatically become generators when throttled below
the actual speed of the train.

MITRAC TCMS
TCMS functions has been divided into three sections:
Comfort Section
Neither safety related nor critical
Passenger Comfort,
Operation Section
Not safety related but mission critical
Functions that perform basic control of
a train

Safety related function up to SIL2
TCMS platform offer products & functions to support the
implementations of safety related functions, e.g braking, door opening etc.

MITRAC TCMS
Hierarchical Network Structure:
Some basic design Criteria which indicate a hierarchical n/w structure:
Comm. b/w consist shall be based on internationals standards to achieve interoperability.
Comm. Inside a consist can be, but not recommended, proprietary to one manufacturer.
The break-down of the comm. System within one consist shall not compromise the comm. in or
b/w other consists.
The break-down of the comm. b/w consists shall not affect the comm. Inside a consist.

Communication Network
TCN:
Train wide network for inter-trainset comm.
Called “Wired Train Bus(WTB)”.
Networks for each trainset, called the
“Multifunction Vehicle Bus(MVB)”
TCN is standardized by IEC.
IP-TCN:
MITRAC TCMS IP-TCN supports three levels of
communication:
 Within a train “Ethernet Train(ETB)”.
 Within a consist Ethernet Consist
Network(ECN).
 Between train and ground, Wireless train to
Wayside, T2W.
