Unit 5: Green Skills
• The environment around us affects all aspects of our life;
and all our day-to-day activities also affect the
environment.
• Everything around us forms our environment and our
lives depend on the natural world around us.
• Over the years, with economic development, there has
been an increase in environmental pollution.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Sustainable development is the development that satisfies the
needs of the present without compromising the capacity of
future generations to meet their own needs and guaranteeing
the balance between economic growth, care for the
environment and social well-being.
Problems Related to Sustainable
Development
⚫Food: The amount of rich, fertile land needed to grow crops, such as
wheat, rice, etc., is becoming less as we are using up more and more
land for other purposes.
⚫Water: We use fresh water from rivers and ponds for drinking and
cleaning but dump garbage into them. The rivers and ponds are getting
polluted.
⚫Fuel: We are using a lot of wood from trees as fuels and for construction
of homes and furniture. it is affecting the climate of the place. Extreme
weather conditions, such as floods, extreme cold or heat, are seen in
many places, which affect the people living there.
Our Role towards Sustainable
Development
United Nations has formed 17 Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) so that countries and nations can work towards finding a
solution to the growing problems in the world.
o Quality Education
o Clean Water and Sanitation
o Affordable and Clean Energy
o Decent Work and Economic Growth
o Reduced Inequalities
o Sustainable Cities and Communities
o Responsible Consumers and Producers
o Protect Life Below Water
o Protect Life on Land
NATURAL RESOURCE
⚫Natural Resource - Any natural material that is
used by humans or
⚫Resources that the Earth provides for you
⚫EX: Water, Petroleum, Minerals, Forests
⚫Renewable Resources - can be replaced
⚫Nonrenewable Resources - Once they’re gone,
they’re gone!!
NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION
To conserve natural resources, you should
try to use them only when necessary.
3 R’s
⚫Reduce
⚫Reuse
⚫Recycle
GREEN ECONOMY - INTRODUCTION
– Cities around the globe are trying to figure out how to grow
green – i.e., how to generate economic activity that preserves
and enhances environmental quality while using natural
resources more efficiently.
– Though the path to reducing human impact on the
environment is clear, we are less sure about how to grow our
economies and benefit society’s least advantaged members at
the same time – in other words, how to link the three E’s
(environment, economy, and equity) of development
WHY GREEN ECONOMY?
Energy efficiency policies on
some priority areas
1. Building
2. Appliances
3. Transport
4. Lightings
5. Industry

every man’s need, but not every man’s
greed”
-Mohandas K. Gandhi
