This patent from 1893 describes a "grave alarm" invention intended to prevent people from being buried alive by mistake. The device consists of a tube extending from inside the coffin to above the surface of the grave. It is connected to a spring-loaded flag and linkage within the coffin. If the person regains consciousness after burial and pulls on a cord, it will activate the alarm above ground and also provide fresh air through the tubes to sustain life until help arrives. The goal was to provide a way for people who were wrongly declared dead or in a coma to signal that they are still alive and need assistance.
