This document discusses techniques for building trust in online mediation and negotiation. It notes that fraudulent identities and reinvented online identities have contributed to a drift away from trust online. To build trust, mediators must generate trust in their own online identity. Understanding parties' internet experiences, environments, and personalities can also help build trust. Mediators should discourage multitasking by parties, maintain commitments, and clarify how confidentiality is maintained to increase a sense of presence online. Misunderstandings are more likely online so responses must be carefully scaled.
