The document is a thesis submitted by Navdeep Singh Jamwal for a M.Sc. degree in Plant Breeding and Genetics from Punjab Agricultural University in 2011. The thesis studied whether genetic distances based on SSR markers and other parental traits could predict the means and variances of F4 progenies in Gossypium arboreum. Fifty-two F4 populations and their 17 parents were evaluated for various yield and fiber traits. Genetic diversity analysis using 57 SSR primers detected 74 alleles among the parents. The thesis found moderate correlation between parental means and F4 population means for some traits like seed cotton yield and halo length. This study analyzed introgression from P. balsamifera into P. trichocarpa and found evidence that introgressed regions may provide adaptations. Three introgressed regions were identified on chromosomes 6, 12, and 15. The region on chromosome 15 showed enrichment for genes involved in development and signals of balancing selection, suggesting adaptive introgression. Introgressed alleles in this region were associated with higher chlorophyll content in P. trichocarpa, which could confer faster growth. Further genome-wide and phenotypic analyses are needed to better understand the adaptive effects of introgression.

This document presents the results of a study examining the phylogeographic structure of two Philippine drongo species - Dicrurus balicassius and Dicrurus hottentottus - in order to investigate current taxonomy and genetic structure. The study sequenced DNA from specimens to reconstruct a phylogeny. Results showed that the two species were not monophyletic and some subspecies represented distinct species, indicating current taxonomy underestimates diversity. In particular, D. h. striatus comprised two divergent lineages and D. h. palawanensis may be a distinct species, while D. b. mirabilis was highly divergent from other D. balicassius subspecies. This document describes a new species of Rhododendron found in the Gaoligong Mountains of Yunnan, China. Morphologically, Rhododendron baihuaense can be distinguished from related species by its absent scales on mature leaves, 2-5 flowers per inflorescence, funnel-shaped white corollas, and slender erect styles. Molecular analysis of DNA barcoding regions supports R. baihuaense as genetically distinct from close relatives. Both morphological and genetic evidence demonstrate this represents a new species, Rhododendron baihuaense, endemic to Yunnan.

This document summarizes a study on the diversity of butterfly species in the Union Council Koaz Bahram Dheri region of Pakistan. A total of 232 butterflies from 13 species across 3 families were collected and identified between July and October 2012. The family Nymphalidae was most abundant with 114 individuals (49%), followed by Pieridae with 86 (37%) and Papilionidae with 32 (14%). Danaus chrysippus was the most commonly observed species overall with 72 individuals (31%). Collection sites varied in species richness, with the highest diversity found at Hajji Sargund Kally. The highest butterfly activity occurred in the month of August.

This study examined the frequency of the DRD4 7 repeat allele in experimental groups involved in high-risk activities compared to a control group. It found a statistically higher frequency of the 7+ repeat in Olympic bobsledders and rock climbers but not in expeditionary studies students. While students reported a willingness to take risks, many may have lacked expertise. The study could be improved by considering participants' level of expertise rather than just risk-taking tendencies.
