3. Renowned for its beaches, places of worship and world heritage architecture, Goa is
visited by large numbers of international and domestic tourists each year.
It also has rich flora and fauna, owing to its location on the Western Ghats range,
which is classified as a biodiversity hotspot.
Panaji is the state's capital, while Vasco da Gama is the largest city. The historic city
of Margao still exhibits the cultural influence of the Portuguese, who first landed in the
early 16th century as merchants and conquered it soon thereafter.
4. Goa’s history goes back to 20,000-30,000 years
Ancient name was “Rewti Dweep”
Inhabited and ruled by the Sumerians around
2200 BC, Goa has been ruled by several other
rulers which included Ashoka – The Great as well.
In 1312, Goa came under the governance of
Delhi Sultanate.
5. In 1510, the Portuguese established a
permanent settlement in Goa.
On 19 December 1961, the Indian Army took
Goa and Daman and Diu from the Portuguese.
Goa was initially declared a Union Territory.
However, on May 30 1987, Goa was made India’s
twenty-fifth state.
7. DANCE AND MUSIC
- Dekhnni, Fugdi, Corridinho, Mando etc. are some of the
traditional art forms.
- Also, many classical singers like Kishori Amonkar and Jitendra Abhisheki
come from Goa.
- Goa is also known as the origin of Goa trance which has given birth to
Psytrance as well.
THEATRE
- Natak, Tiatr and Zagor are the chief forms of Goa’s traditional
performance arts.
- Stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata along with other social
subjects are narrated with songs and dance.
8. FOOD
- Rice with fish curry is the staple diet in Goa.
- Goan cuisine is famous for its rich variety of fish dishes
cooked with elaborate recipes.
- Khatkhate, an exotic vegetable stew is very famous during festivals.
- Most popular alcoholic beverage is feni which is prepared through
the fermentation of the fruit of a cashew tree.
- Goa has a rich wine culture as well. Wine is famous for it’s healthy
benefits and on festivals and events it is consumed as a
symbol of celebration.
9. GOA CARNIVAL
- The Carnival is unique to Goa in India, and was introduced by the Portuguese
who ruled over Goa for over four centuries.
- This large scale celebration, known as Intruz takes place in the city of Panaji.
- The Carnival is celebrated for three days and nights, when the legendary King Momo
takes over the state and the streets come alive with music and colour.
- Huge parades are organized throughout the state with bands, dances and floats out
all night on the streets, and grand balls held in the evenings.
10. - Goa is one of India’s richest states with the
highest
GDP per capita which is two and a half times
that
of the country as a whole.
- Tourism is Goa’s primary industry as it handles
12% of all foreign tourist arrivals in India.
- Mining focuses on iron, bauxite, manganese,
clays,
limestone and silica.
- Rice is the main agricultural crop followed by
areca, cashew and coconut.
- Medium scale industries include manufacturing
of pesticides, fertilizers, tyres etc. Interestingly,
no more SEZs are allowed in Goa.
- Goa is also notable for its low beer, wine and
spirits prices due to its very low excise duty on
alcohol.
12. - Goa has a unicameral legislature consisting of a forty member Legislative
Assembly,
headed by the Chief Minister (currently Manohar Parrikar of B.J.P.).
- The Government and Politics in Goa has its legislative capital in Porvorim.
Porvorim is the seat of the Goa assembly.
- The state's judicial capital, however, is beyond the state borders in Mumbai. All
judicial
transactions fall under the Bombay High Court. A bench of the High Court is
present
in Panaji.
- After having stable governance for nearly thirty years up to 1990, Goa is now
notorious
for its political instability having seen fourteen governments in the span of the
fifteen
years between 1990 and 2005.
- Some of the prominent political parties present in Goa are Bhartiya Janta Party
(BJP),
Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, United Goans Democratic Party and the
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
14. - Goa is India's richest state with a GDP per
capita two and a half times that of the
country as a whole.
- It was ranked the best placed state by the
11th Finance Commission for its infrastructure
and ranked on top for the best quality of life in
India by the National Commission.
- Goa was awarded the best e-governed state
award.
- In January 2013, the Goa assembly got a
high-tech face lift with the introduction of
HD screens, iPads and surround speakers.
- When it comes to tourism, Goa has grabbed
countless awards in more than ten different
categories.
