FOCUS
Energy Production, transportation and use of energy to a large extent affect the environment and ecosystem The most dangerous sources of energy now days are: fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas -> during their combustion large amounts of carbon dioxide are emitted radioactive fuel from nuclear power stations -> affects the structure of organisms on a basic level
Tips Use energy saving light bulbs Shut the television, video, stereo and computer when not in use Use devices that save energy Wash economically Do not hold the refrigerator door open longer than necessary
Water Water is the foundation of life and the basic ingredient of every human being. Climate changes strongly affect the reserves of drinking water in some parts of our planet. In many areas, especially in developing countries, there has been lesser and lesser drinking water.
Tips Reduce hot water consumption! Use cold water instead of warm, and wash only when machines are completely filled with clothing or dishes and cutlery! If you heat only as much water as you need you will save a lot of energy Heat less water!
Recycling Recycling refers to everything that can be used again. Almost everything can be recycled: Paper: News paper can be recycled at least 7 times. Cardboard packaging is mostly made of recycled paper. Plastics: PET packaging for mineral water, refreshing drinks, food, oil, etc.. Glass: Collected from the container, glass waste is transported to the glass factory and at the end a new bottle is formed. Metal: Aluminum, steel, copper and other metals are particularly valuable because they belong to the nonrenewable natural resources. It is possible to recycle most of metals.
Tips Recycle paper - do not throw newspapers! Sort out paper from glass, plastic, metal and throw them in special containers Use a product more than once! Glass can be recycled 100%, and unlimitedly used over and over again! 1 recycled glass bottle saves energy needed for computer to be on for 25 minutes! 1 recycled can saves energy that TV can use for 3 hours!
Habits Buy refill packaging for maintenance of both personal and home hygiene, and for washing. Avoid buying goods that are excessively packaged. For example, fruits and vegetables do not need to be packed in plastics. Avoid unnecessary and excessive use of aluminum foil and cellophane. Clothes that you no longer wear or books that you do not need don't throw in a container, but give them to friends or charities, or offer to second-hand stores Try to sell or give away old furniture and appliances rather than leave them next to a container Photocopy on both sides of a paper.
Tips Go on foot, ride a bicycle or use public transport Instead of plastic bag, use a bag of natural materials Enjoy in planting and growing plants Clean and change filters of the air-conditioners Buy goods of recycled materials or in packaging which is eco-friendly
