eXtreme Gammon vs GNU Backgammon
My favourite features..
GNU Backgammon & eXtreme Gammon (XG) are two of
the most popular ‘bots’ used to play backgammon
They use sophisticated neural nets and can beat any
human over a reasonably long series of matches
They offer tools for analyzing gameplay and provide
detailed comparisons of each player’s move options
This slideshow gives my opinion on their best features
Things XG does better than GNU..
Faster rollouts
“3x the speed of GNUBG in 3-ply”
World-class level engine
eXtreme Gammon claims to be the strongest bot available.

More configurable GUI
XG has many graphical add-on and animation options
Move indicators
XG can show arrows indicating correct movement.
Really helps with quick comprehension!
Completed match statistics are automatically
added to your player profile history
In GNU Backgammon, you have to manually add each
match to the database each time you finish :-/
Built in timer
Supports Fischer and Bronstein clock settings
Multiple dice distribution windows
Great for understanding why the best play is best.
I hope GNUBG will introduce this feature one day.
Preset for position export in BGO
(Backgammon Online forum) format
..and import of
matches from most
major sites
A reasonable price - $59.95
Discounts are available for UKBGF or USBGF members

Also has a strong mobile and tablet
version

Things GNU does better than XG..
'Efficient' interface
No clutter, very
clean and clear.
Austere, but not
ugly.
A more 'lightweight' implementation
Feels 'smoother' and less CPU intensive to me.
Very quick to launch.
Supports dragging to points
A more ‘natural’ ability to drag checkers to points.
Can you drag and drop checkers in eXtreme Gammon??
I hope the developers will add this feature as an option.
Double column move listing
This great feature
adds separation and
clarity to your moves.
Plus there is much less
need for scrolling.
I hope XG will
introduce this format
as an option one day.
Live theory displaying
Return Hits & Kleinmann Count
This educational feature can help you
practice your 'shot-counting'
SQL database queries
With some SQL
knowledge you
can generate
custom reports
on your gameplay
history through
SQL queries
An unbeatable price :)
It’s 100% free!

Conclusion
Both bots have some clever features that would
benefit the other in some way.
I highly recommend both of them!

Editor's Notes

  • #6 Check this link for more info..
  • #9 Comprehensive statistics are generated and saved for playing account and online account
  • #10 Great for practicing speedgammon!
  • #11 When you CTRL-select multiple candidate plays and choose "dice distribution" from the right-click menu, XG displays the dice distribution windows side-by-side!
  • #18 The ability to drag checkers to points (rather than clicking) feels more 'natural' to me
  • #19 The single column format used by XG makes it less clear to see which moves are yours, and which are your Opponent’s. I hope XG will offer this option one day.
  • #22 100% free and Open Source!
  • #23 I have been using GNU Backgammon for longer, but am using XG a bit more now that I have a faster computer.
