many legends. Summer is an orphan.
Summary
The story starts at a Shoshone powwow. That is where the Landon family was going to pick up two foster Indian children, Ethan and Summer. After
the powwow, everyone went to see Sacagawea’s grave. When they got there Ethan suggested they do the Ghost Dance, which was an Indian dance
that Ethan liked. After the dance, everyone got in the car to go to Zion National Park. When they got there, they went to see a few rangers round up
a wild horse. Mr. Landon was a cowboy as a kid so he helped the rangers catch the wild horse. The next day, Mrs. Landon, who was an animal
scientist, had a meeting with the park rangers to talk to them about their animals. While she was there, Mr. Landon and the four kids went on a hike
near the Narrows Canyons Ethan and Summer got too far ahead and Mr. Landon couldn’t see them anymore. Suddenly there was a rock fall and
when it was over, Summer with Ethan right behind her ran down to ask if everything was alright. Mr. Landon decided it was time to go back. That
night while Ethan was asleep, Jack crept into his parents’ room to talk about Ethan. The conversation didn’t go as Jack planned so he decided to try
and leave Ethan alone. The next day was the day Jack was hiking the Narrows with his father. Ethan had heard what Jack had said about him last
night and he started a fight. Mr. Landon broke them up and told them they had to be nicer to each other and the only way for that to happen would
be if they spent more time with each other so he invited Ethan to go on their hike to the Narrows. Jack tried to protest but Mr. Landon had made up
his mind. At the beginning of the trail and there was a sign that read: “ALL NARROW CANYONS ARE POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS. FLASH FLOODS,
COLD WATER, AND STRONG CURRENTS PRESENT REAL DANGERS THAT CAN BE LIFE-THREATENING. YOUR SAFETY DEPENDS ON YOUR OWN GOOD
JUDGEMENT, ADEQUATE PREPERATION, AND CONSTANT ATTENTION. BY ENTERING A NARROW CANYON, YOU ARE ASSUMING A RISK.” Mr. Landon
decided they were prepared, so they continued on. They slipped on the rocks because they were wearing sneakers. After a while, Mr. Landon
tripped on a small hole and Ethan burst out laughing. He said it was Jack’s fault because he had done the Ghost Dance. Ethan explained that the
dance was supposed to get rid of white people. He said that the dance made the rocks fall and had made a horse almost crush Ashley earlier that
day. After awhile, Jack heard what sounded like thunder. It wasn’t thunder though, it was a FLASH FLOOD. Everyone hurried along looking for a
ledge to climb onto and escape the flood. Finally, they found one and Mr. Landon lifted Ethan up. Ethan pulled Jack up. HERE IT COMES, he shouted.
GET BACK! He hung on tight but he just couldn’t hold on. A big log came up and knocked him off the ledge and hit Jack in the head. Mr. Landon was
swept away with the current. Jack tried to go after him but Ethan held him down and told him not to move. Ethan attempted to start a fire with the
log but it was too wet and it just smoked. They stayed there until the flood ended, then Ethan got off the ledge and pulled Jack down with him.
Jack’s injury made him half unconscious, so Ethan had to pull him along. After what seemed like an hour, they finally got back to the beginning of the
trail. The crowd of people waiting there for them cheered. They had made it! Jack heard his mother calling him and he woke up completely. Mom?
Jack said. I’m right here honey. So is everyone else. Jack told his mother about how Ethan had saved him. He felt okay even though he went to the
hospital. He saw everyone sitting in chairs near the hospital bed. They told him that when Mrs. Landon heard about the flood, she sped over to the
river. Ethan told him about all the things he said and how none of them made sense. And they all enjoyed the rest of their vacation. THE END
My Opinion
I liked this book because I like adventures and this book has
things that might occur in an adventure book. I like the part
where they first hear the flood coming and in your mind, you are
thinking “what’s going to happen? Are they all going to make it?”
I think “Ghost Horses” is a good book for people who like
suspense and hidden elements important to the story. For
example, in “Ghost Horses”, You find out in the middle of the
story that the Ghost Dance is supposed to get rid of white
people, and at the end, you find out it’s also supposed to bring
back dead indians.
