The German court system has constitutional jurisdiction over constitutional matters handled by the Bundesverfassungsgericht. It also has ordinary jurisdiction over civil and criminal law handled first by the Amtsgericht, then the Landgericht and Oberlandesgericht if appealed, with final appeals going to the Bundesgerichtshof. Special jurisdictions also exist for labor, administrative, fiscal, social security, and patent cases. Judges are selected through a combination of appointment and election and citizens have access to the court system with legal aid available if unable to pay court fees.
