José Datrino, known as Profeta Gentileza, was born in São Paulo but moved to Rio de Janeiro after a circus accident. In Rio, he began walking around the city spreading messages of kindness by painting panels with his words of wisdom, though he was often rude to those who disagreed with him. The 56 panels were painted in the 1880s on pillars of an overpass in Avenida Brasil to convey Gentileza's messages to political leaders during a 1992 event being held in the city.
