He travels to Cartagena where he is welcomed, but the city is destroyed from the independence war. His health declines further in Cartagena, with deliriums. Despite offers to stay, he insists on continuing his journey. However, he changes his mind at the last moment. He moves to a house in La Popa Hill for a better climate. He is grieved to learn of the death of Sucre and further deteriorates. Events in Venezuela and Bogota are reported to him.
