The Jordanian Gendarmerie was established in 2008 through a royal decree that separated it from the armed forces and public security directorate. It has around 25,000 members with a military structure but reports to civilian authorities. Its mission is to maintain security and order through tasks like crime prevention, public order, counterterrorism and disaster response. It is organized into regional directorates and specialized units and participates in international peacekeeping missions.
