CF Industries: Real-time Efficiency −
Using Innovative Data Collection Techniques
and the Right KPIs to Drive Excellence
Bryan Pigg – Network Supervisor, CF Industries
The convergence of IT and OT is impacting
all of us – people struggling with old tools
or adjusting to new ones can get stuck on a
“decision making treadmill.” Efficiency is
elusive as data is over-collected but under
utilized. How can you provide solutions to
capture the data you need, enable
real-time decision making, and give
management the visibility they demand?
CF Industries will discuss how to identify the KPIs that
drive business, use innovative data collection techniques
to enable real-time decision making, and make efficiency
everybody’s business.

Chevron: Increasing Agility and Eliminating
the Security Risks of Contractor Access to
Mission Critical Data
Ravi Malla – Upstream Workflow Transformation Program
Manager, Chevron
Chevron Exploration and Production, like
many other oil and gas companies, faced
a big operation and security problem –
how to simply and quickly provide users in
the field with secure access to critical
company data when most of those users
are not Chevron employees.
Chevron, like much of the oil and
gas industry, utilizes contractors for mission critical
maintenance and repair activities in the field. Since, on
average, 77% of oil and gas personnel are contractors, this
presents a significant user management problem.
So how did Chevron solve their user management and
security problem and provide additional agility into their
user management operations?
In this session, Chevron’s UWT Program Manager, Ravi
Malla will explain how the company is working with
COVISINT to implement the solution to contractor access
and identity management for mission critical systems.
ROOM: 320 C Sponsored by Gimmal
Transocean: Driving Global Rig Documentation
Management for the Enterprise
Tony Borst – Director of IT Application Services, Transocean
Decentralized content spread across
multiple business applications and
document management systems made it
difficult and inefficient to connect people,
processes, and content. For example, rig
workers pulling documentation from
multiple sources to perform maintenance
resulted in wasted time, reduced
effectiveness, and higher costs.
As a result, Transocean began a project to align their
numerous document management solutions and business
applications to support the operation, collaboration, and
management of 70-plus globally-dispersed offshore,
deepwater drilling rigs and their supporting onshore offices.
Attend this session to hear how the new “full service”
RigDocs Commercial Content Management System has
increased efficiency and reduced costs by providing a
central location for documents across the enterprise.

Nalco Champion: Driving Value in
Energy Extraction with Real-time
Information Management
John Schlitt – General Manager Automation Center of
Excellence, Energy Services, Nalco
Nalco wanted to improve the efficiency of
chemical usage and dispersion to improve
the quality of water used in energy extraction
and production. To solve these issues, Nalco
implemented commercial off-the-shelf
technologies to manage information and
assets remotely. Nalco’s Refined Knowledge®
solution, combined with Rockwell
Automation’s programmable automation
controllers and Microsoft SharePoint, uses the internet to allow
assets such as cooling and heating water equipment to operate
more efficiently with longer life and improved thermal transfer
characteristics reducing life cycle costs.
Join this session to learn how these same concepts can be
applied to improve the delivery and treatment of water used
in production to help improve environmental standards.
ROOM: 310 C Sponsored by Catapult
Plains All American Pipeline: Implementing an
Engineering Project Controls Management System
Michael E. Cartwright – Engineering, Manager of Process
Control, Plains All American Pipeline
Plains All American Pipeline, L.P. (PAALP)
owns approximately 18,000 miles of
pipelines throughout the US and Canada,
operates a fleet of 582 trailers, 104 barges,
and 51 transport tugs, and owns storage
capacity of at least 23 million barrels. In
order to remain compliant with DoT,
OSHA and other regulatory agency
requirements, Plains All American Pipeline,
must maintain complete and proper records for its
pipelines and facilities and be able to quickly produce
documentation during an audit. In addition, the company
continues to invest in capital expansion projects and
programs with a higher degree of complexity, increased
regulatory scrutiny, continued focus on cost/risk
management and a lower tolerance for delays.
Given the complexity of their business, Plains All American
Pipeline implemented an Engineering Project Controls
Management System (EPCMS), which includes a full-
lifecycle Electronic Document Management System that
aligns to PAALP’s defined business process throughout all
stages of PAALP capital projects.
Attend this session to learn how Plains All American Pipeline
used this new system to increase operating efficiency.

The Williams Companies: The Journey
To Self-Service BI
Eric Vogelpohl – Senior IT Manager, The Williams Companies
Like many companies in the energy
industry, The Williams Companies’ IT
department found itself supporting a
variety of Business Intelligence (BI)
packages. This required IT to staff a variety
of skill sets and forced data into silos by
reporting package, which required IT staff
to spend a large amount of time building
BI. As a result of the time intensity of
building BI, the IT department became a barrier for the
business user to collect needed information.
The Williams Companies realized that their data was an
asset that could be mined to gain business insights, which
would help in optimizing operations and reducing costs.
The key was for IT to standardize on the Microsoft BI stack
to enable self-service BI. This allowed business users to
gather their own reports and reuse the data as needed.
As The Williams Companies completes this transformation,
IT is finding itself less a provider of one-off data projects
and more a provider of data-as-a-service. This change has
allowed IT to focus more on data quality and master data
management. The result is that business users now have
easy access to data, the ability to analyze the data using
everyday productivity tools, and the confidence that their
analysis is based on accurate data.
Join this session to find out how The Williams Companies
were able to put this valuable data in the hands of users.

BreitBurn Energy Partners: Enabling
Business Through a Pragmatic Approach
to Enterprise Information
Mike Dominick – Manager of Systems Integration and
Development, BreitBurn Energy
Upstream oil and gas exploration and
production (E&P) companies face a broad
spectrum of challenges due to the vast
array of complex, data-driven software
required to support the well life cycle.
For BreitBurn Energy, some of these issues
included siloed data and applications,
multiple versions of master data, and
limited scalability and supportability.
As a result, BreitBurn Energy has aligned their ERP
implementation with the build out of an Upstream
Information Architecture, which provides the ability to
centrally manage and present master and transactional
data across the organization. By using industry standard
models (PPDM) and the Microsoft toolset as the foundation
for managing and presenting data, BreitBurn can provide
unified and supportable solutions for managing structured
and unstructured data to help make faster, more informed
business decisions.
Come and hear Mike Dominick discuss how BreitBurn
tackled their ERP challenges with this solution.

McDermott: Managing and Tracking Complex
EPC Projects Using Business Intelligence
Maurice Tayeh – CIO, McDermott
The single biggest challenge of an EPC
project is to execute it on schedule and
within budget. Traditionally, EPC projects
run on single digit profit margins.
Improving project execution by making
data available for decision-makers can
help improve operations and allow them
to take necessary interventions to avoid
cost overruns.
McDermott has been very successful in executing large,
complex EPC projects for its oil and gas clients under very
challenging circumstances. The nature of the business
demands accuracy and oversight, which is made much easier
when the necessary data is available to business users.
As a result, the company implemented PARS (Project
Analytics and Reporting System), a standardized and
centralized project controls reporting system, which draws
information from various systems. PARS is an attempt to
transform and standardize the setup of projects at granular
levels, and it has multiple business, process, data, and
technology components. This system provides ease of
access to project data for meaningful analysis, which can
be used as an indicator of true project health.
Attend this session to find out how McDermott used PARS
to put valuable data right in the hands of its users.

efficiency and made it easier for the business user to find
relevant information.
Come to this session to hear how BHP Billiton Petroleum
successfully implemented this solution across the value
chain and tailored it to supporting functions for improved
access to critical business information.

Microsoft Services: Defending Against
Modern Cyber Attacks
Nate Morin (L) – Chief Technology Officer for the Microsoft
Services’ CyberSecurity practice, Microsoft Corporation
Patrick Arnold (R) – CyberSecurity General Manager,
Microsoft Services, Microsoft Corporation
Both public sector and
commercial networks
alike are under
increasing threat from
ideological groups,
which commit attacks to
gain notoriety and
embarrass their victims;
criminal syndicates,
which steal monetizable assets such as credit card numbers;
and national governments, which attack networks in order
to gain advantage over potential adversaries and transfer
commercial trade secrets to favored local industries. It is
little wonder that CIOs include security as one of their Top
10 priorities.
Microsoft has a view of attackers that is unparalleled. Since
we are both a product and online service company with
widespread global reach, we are able to bring what we
learn to our customers.
Come and hear Nate Morin, Chief Technology Officer for
the Microsoft Services’ CyberSecurity practice, and Pat
Arnold, GM of CyberSecurity, discuss industry-specific
trends in CyberSecurity and how to improve your security
posture and mitigate attacks utilizing Microsoft Services’
solutions and our team of experts.

Rockwater Energy Solutions: Oil & Gas Start-up
to Scalable Enterprise
Biren Kumar – VP and CIO, Rockwater Energy Solutions
Aggressive growth requires systems that
can keep pace with that growth.
Rockwater came together in summer of
2011, with the combination of four
companies. Growing from a start-up to a
billion in revenue over a 24 month
period, with an increase in employees
from 1400 to 3000 during the same
period, through acquisition of a number
of companies at a very aggressive pace to fill out its
product and geographic offering. The acquired companies
ranged from specialty chemical manufacturing to trucking
to rentals, pit-lining, and more. The legacy companies and
the acquisitions ran a variety of different financial and ERP
packages – none of which could scale past a hundred
users or had the breadth of functionality the company
needed without major customization.
Rockwater was looking for a system to support its diverse
functional needs but still remain agile and flexible
enough to continue to grow with its aggressive plans. The
company needed a platform that allowed for scale, would
drive efficiency, and would become the foundation to
differentiate its product offering.
Attend this session to learn how Rockwater uses Dynamics
AX & CRM to keep pace with their aggressive past and
future growth.
