The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) was established in 1990 as an advocacy group focused on anti-bullying and harassment initiatives. It aims to ensure safe schools for all students and joined America's Promise Alliance, a large partnership of organizations dedicated to improving outcomes for children. The Civil Rights Project works to achieve racial and ethnic equality, strengthen racial justice efforts, and publish reports on critical civil issues related to equal educational opportunities and key K-12 research areas including bilingual education, school segregation, diversity, and drop-outs. Both GLSEN and the Civil Rights Project aim to influence non-discrimination and safe school policies at the local, state, and federal levels through education and universal initiatives
