Kajaani UAS has integrated games development into healthcare. This presentation displays two examples how gamification can improve healtcare solutions: My Life is a life management game targeted to youth. Stroke Kinect is a game to rehabilitate stroke patients.

4. The aim
• was to develop a demo version of a network
game to support the life management skills of 16
– 19 year old young people
• and to plan an international follow-up scheme to
complete the game.

5. During the pilot stage:
• Central youth life management problems have been surveyed and the
themes selected for the content of the game were: mental health,
intoxicants, becoming independent and choices in everyday life.
• Mental health professionals were involved in the survey and planning of
content and students of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences will be
responsible for developing the game.
• A demo version of the game, “Home” has been tested in Kainuu and
Southern Finland within the area of youth psychiatric treatment and in
different educational institutions in late 2012.
• Nursing students specialising in mental health work have conducted
theoretical and empirical background surveys as their Bachelor’s thesis for
the purposes of developing the final game as a whole.

6. My Life game
• The whole game consists of fields located in different environments
(home, schools, parties) where the young people must solve
different situation based life-related problems/situations
• The player can select different avatars
• The player makes choices which affect life as the game progresses,
e.g. new dialogue opportunities come up when the player receives
good karma points
• The game play time for one field is about 15 minutes
