Society of Social Psychiatry and Mental Health (S.S.P &M.H.) is a non-
profit, scientific organization, which was founded in 1981 by the child
and adult psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Professor Panayiotis
Sakellaropoulos.
The S.S.P.& M.H. has made a significant contribution to Greece’s
psychiatric reform by providing high quality psychiatric and
psychological support services in order to promote good mental
health and well-being. Underlined and guided by the ideological
framework of social psychiatry the S.S.P.& M.H. delivers all its
prevention and therapeutic services within the community. Particular
emphasis is placed on the provision of out-of-hospital treatment
to avoid hospitalization and institutionalization.
All services provided by the S.S.P.& M.H. are for free.
The S.S.P.& M.H. is funded by the Ministry of Health, EU projects and
private donations.

A review of 2017 shows we remained consistent in the achievement of
our following strategic goals:
1. Continuous provision of qualitative services based on the principles of social
psychiatry
2. Prompt and active response to community-based needs
3. Support and promotion of mental health rights
4. Staff development through seminars and trainings
5. Implementation of educational programs for various groups of professionals
6. Communication/advocacy
7. Development of partnerships and networks in Greece and Europe
Despite the demanding external environment due to the financial and sociopolitical
crisis, we remained committed to the abovementioned priorities thanks to the valuable
support and contribution of our clinical and administrative staff, our users and their
families. Especially in times of crisis joining forces and voices with other actors in Greek
and abroad has been proved particularly helpful since networks and synergies nurtured
within the community enrich our knowledge and empower our work in the mental
health sector.
Therefore, we commit to keep walking the difficult mental health path making use of all
available means and alliances and having as a key guide our values and strategic vision.
I encourage our colleagues, users and supporters to continue working with respect,
commitment, patience and hope for a better future of mental health.

The Mobile Mental Health Units' (MMHUs) run in the regions of Thrace and
Fokida guided by the philosophy of Social Psychiatry, and thus focusing on
the provision of outof-hospital services described as follows:
• Provision of free mental health services in the local community
so that people in need can get the necessary treatment without
being isolated by family members or the wider community
• Prevention in mental health issues
• Diagnosis, treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation of
individuals with psychosocial problems and support to their
families
• Implementation of community sensitization activities
• Facilitation of local population’s access to mental health
services
Services are provided by a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social
workers, speech and language therapists, drama therapists, occupational
therapists, nurses, specialized and non-specialized administrative staff.

The Day Centre for the Psychological Support of Cancer Patients operates since 2003. It offers a wide range
of psychosocial services (i.e. psychological support and counselling, individual and group psychotherapy,
dance therapy and relaxation techniques) in order to help cancer patients and their relatives to deal with
the psychological effects of cancer. It also sets as a target the sensitization and training of health
professionals in public hospitals’ oncological departments while working on the sensitization and awareness
of the public.
The Day Center provides services for the follow-up care of people with mental health problems who live in
the community. The services target residents from the Municipalities of Kallithea,Nea Smyrni and Tavros-
Moschato in Athens, and include psychiatric and psychological assessment, prevention, diagnosis
and therapeutic treatment that are offered for free.
The Day Center develops collaborations with organizations and professionals from the broader health and
social care sector in order to respond better to users’ needs.
The Day Center of Fokida provides services to children, adolescents and adults with developmental,
learning and mental health difficulties. The main focus is theprevention of mental health problems, the
elimination of social exclusion, the improvement of psychosocial skills and the exercise of human rights.
The Day Center provides individual andgroup therapy treatment. All services are offered for free.

Society of Social Psychiatry & Mental Health operates residential houses and semi–autonomous
protected apartments in Attica, Fokida, Fthiotida and Evros. Both structures accommodate people with
mental health problems with the aim to upgrade the quality of their life, to develop their psychosocial
capabilities and facilitate their social integration. In residential houses, each patient follows individually
his/her therapeutic program while participates in group therapies and other collective therapeutic
activities, such as drama therapy and dance movement therapy.
Semi–autonomous protected apartments accommodate people with psychosocial problems who can
live more autonomously. The program focuses on a therapeutic model that encourages reintegration in
the community and promotes mental health stability.

Since 1981 Society of Social Psychiatry & Mental Health, implements a large
number of community sensitization activities and interventions in order to promote
mental health issues, desegregate stigma, and support social integration of people
with mental health problems.
Community sensitization activities include information and education on
mental health issues through conferences, seminars, participat ion in local events
and every day contact with the local community. The activities are
focused on the following axes:
i. Development of networks and par tner ships wi th local authorities and social services
ii. Implementat ion of t raining programs for mental heal the professionals, health
professionals and educational professionals
iii. Organization of scientific seminars and congresses
iv. Psycho-education of citizens.

Responding to our staff training and development needs, in 2017 a total number of 88
training sessions were carried out.
Our staff members and colleagues participated in 33 training seminars conducted by actors
with which we maintain partnerships (e.g. Bodossakis Foundation, Social Dynamo, Babel,
AKMA, etc.)
Beyond the education and training of our own staff, we offered trainings to third-
party actors based on our experience and expertise.
There were organized 6 educational seminars for carers of cancer patients, penitentiary
employees in Fokida, students of Amfissa’s Nursing School and mental health professionals.

From October 2017, Society of Social Psychiatry & Mental Health in collaboration with International Rescue
Committee (IRC) runs a Mobile Unit (MU) in the center of Athens, which is funded by ECHO. The aim of the MU-
which is supported by psychiatrist, child and adult psychologists, speech and language therapist, art therapist and
interpreters- is to provide psychosocial support services to refugees that don’t live in refugee camps. The services
are offered individually or in group therapy scheme. Furthermore, the MU develops sensitization activities and
promotes collaborations with other organizations that work with refugees
S.S.P & M.H. participates in the Mental Health & Psychosocial Working Group (MHPSS WG) for Refugees, which
operates under the auspices of the UN Refugee Agency in collaboration with the Day Center “Babel”. The main
purpose is to develop a network of organizations and actors working with refugees in Greece that will help the
formation of a supervision mechanism (mental health support) for the NGO’s staff coping with extremely
demanding working conditions. Among the organizations that participate in the WG is the Spanish Red Cross,
Praksis, Solidarity Now, UNICEF, International Rescue Committee, International Committee of Red Cross,
Medecins Sans Frontieres, Medecins du Monde etc.
In the context of the program it was developed a series of educational seminars for
youths, parents, teachers and community actors that work with the particular social groups. Raising
awareness around deliberate self-harm behavior and alexithymia as well as offering training about resilience
that helps gain more control over life, were among the key targets of the program. For more information,

The program included educational exchange visits and activities for the support of mental
health professionals’ capacity building and the promotion of innovative practices in mental
health promotion; special focus was given on the prompt intervention that helps the
prevention of mental health disorders and their impact in the life of children and adolescents.

The program aims to enhance the capacity of professionals working with homeless or refugees with mental
health problems. A further purpose is to produce educational material based on the outcomes of workshops,
case studies, and the collection of best and innovative practices. This material will help professionals to support
effectively the target groups by defending their human rights and pursuing more decent living conditions.
The program aims to:
1. Develop an online educational platform for professionals about human rights in mental health.
2. Create a table game about human rights in mental health with a pilot try available for mental health service
The PERMIND program refers to the development of an innovative online learning platform
(www.permind.eu) addressed to mental health professionals. The aim is to create a “therapeutic
garden” based on the philosophy of Permaculture that promotes the equal collaboration between
mental health professionals and users in the course of the production process (garden cultivation).
A mobile application will be developed to train participants. The outcomes of the program will be
publicly communicated through media, e-newsletters and awareness activities.
The program refers to the organization of a sports event for mental health service users and their carers.
The target is to empower users and promote their social inclusion through the sensitizaion of the
community
