Distance education refers to a type of education where teachers and students are physically separated and communicate through means such as printed or electronic media, or technology that allows real-time communication. Distance education is important in India for several reasons, including rapid population growth, geographical limitations, allowing students to study while working, and providing affordable education to more people. Popular distance education universities in India include IGNOU, Annamalai University, Sikkim Manipal University, Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning, and Punjab Technical University. While distance education provides flexibility, potential drawbacks include increased risk of distraction, hidden costs, overreliance on technology, lower quality faculty, and questionable degree credibility in some cases.
