Foreign Trade Zones (FTZs) are secure areas located near US ports of entry that are considered outside of US customs territory. Goods inside an FTZ are not subject to tariffs or customs regulations until they enter the US commercial stream. FTZs are regulated by the Foreign Trade Zones Board and US Customs Service and are intended to expedite foreign commerce and encourage investment by allowing duty deferral, reduction, or elimination on goods inside the zone. FTZ #122 located in Corpus Christi, Texas has 19 approved sites operated by various companies including refineries, manufacturers, and the port itself.
