China claims sovereignty over Tibet but its control has led to human rights abuses against Tibetans. Tibetans are imprisoned, tortured or killed for protesting Chinese rule and wanting independence. While China says it is helping Tibet, its occupation has been violent since the 1950s and Tibetans continue to suffer under Chinese control.
